Another wave of sleeper freepers will hit DU today.
Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 08:49 AM by BleedingHeartPatriot
I'm looking, again, for the over simplification of the Saddam verdict, starting with "we all know that he's an evil person."
(in this instance I'm referring to Saddam instead of gwb)

The wide eyed, innocent protests of how could we DU'ers possibly want anything less than death for Saddam? (BTW, where's Osama?)

The concern that if we remark on the sham trial and the whole Iraq debacle, we could appear as Saddam supporters and weak on (pick one) war, terrorism or national defense.

Newbies and lurkers will chastise us not to appear overly upset that our government orchestrated this lunacy, of which this trial and verdict are part and parcel.

We will be encouraged to cheer this "good" news.

My personal philosophy...attempt honest debate, and, if that doesn't work, ignore.

It's going to be lively today, mon amis. MKJ

1. Does that mean we don't get to be rowdy over the Bear's game?
Cuz if it does, I'm just gonna move from DU to Gameday. :eyes:

2. For me, it's the timing.
The Osama videotape released 2 days before the election in '04 did the trick for the Repubs (or at least helped the spin that voters changed their minds at the last minute).

The timing of the verdict is obviously designed to do the exact same thing this year.

4. Absolutely. The timing is the only thing that should be discussed because
it's a given that nobody on DU is any fan of that fucker Hussein.

5. Won't work, I think. Too much has happened the last two years.
It's finally sinking in how bad Bush has been. Well, maybe not for the 30% backwash. But for sentient Americans.

15. I think you're right.
Also no one (except for DU's "conspiracy theorists") expected them to pull Osama out of the hat at the last minute in '04 but this verdict has been expected for a while so has less shock value.

14. fine by me--only thing I would have regretted about seeing BushCo
in the dock at the Hague would be the idea of Saddam laughing his head off at having outlasted two Bushes.

6. I think you are right. But I say just stick to your principles and
don't let the trolls get under your skin. It makes no difference what Saddam did or did not do, this trial was a sham and a fraud - just like everything else the American Dictator's government has anything to do with. I reject this trial and the sentence based purely upon how it was conducted and why it was held.

11. I'd love to cut and paste your post, with attribution, of course,.
As I stumble across their posts today.

Concise, to the point, a perfect summation.

7. Hooray, He's Convicted
What now?

That doesn't change the situation in Iraq. And if you try to tell me that it will make things better in Iraq, well, I think it could make things worse between the Shia and Sunnis. Besides, after all the administration's "turning the corner" and "last throes" rhetoric, why should the American people believe them now?

Would You Rather Sadaam Were Still In Power?
We should refuse to answer this as a yes or no question, because it is not.
It implies that the choice is betwen the current situation in Iraq vs Sadaam still in power.
It supports an "ends justifies the means" approach

Some tip-offs will be "this is the Dems war too", "Throw out all the incumbents", etc. Just make, er, liberal use of the alert button.

18. Here's what I want to know...
If our armed forces really captured Saddam, why didn't we
follow the Geneva Conventions and turn him over to the
International Courts like so many before him?

And why is he being tried in Iraq for 1982 crimes?

Makes no sense to me whatsoever.

This article shows how BushCo manipulated the Geneva Conventions
to get this Iraqi court deal.
