United Steelworkers Local 8888 Surprises George Allen

Doris Crouse-Mays, secretary-treasurer of the Virginia AFL-CIO, sends us the following report from that state, where a neck-in-neck Senate campaign could make the difference for Democratic control of the Senate.

On Friday, Sen. George Allen (R) tried to appear at the shipyard gates at Northrop Grumman in Newport News, Va. What he did not know was that the Women of Steel, along with many union members, already had scheduled a rally with Lynda Robb, the wife of former Sen. Chuck Robb and daughter of President Lyndon Johnson, state Sen. Mamie Locke and state Reps. Mamye BaCote and Jeion Ward.

Imagine the look when Allen turned the corner and saw that there were 30 to 40 Jim Webb signs. Somebody had made a big mistake on the part of the Allen campaign. The Republican Chairmen for Hampton and Newport News were extremely shocked, along with Allen. Allen did get out, looked over the situation and quickly stepped into a nearby restaurant. There would be no shaking hands at our gates—the only shaking hands were done by the Women of Steel and the Local 8888 union members.

Allen was followed and talked to as only true union members can do and finally realized this was one campaign stop that had broken down and was a disaster. We asked his staff: Where was he in 1999 when we had to strike? Unlike Webb, who walked the picket line with striking members of the United Steelworkers last week, Allen didn’t greet the workers then, so no reason to greet them that day. It was a great scene in Newport News.

10. Hey!!! He was showing the workers that he was friends of their boss
What's good for the boss is good for the workers! We all know that to be the truth. That's why the bosses let the workers give their input on how to run the business.

13. Wow, quite the little vortex of evil there
Thug Macacawitz vs the daughter of the thug who covered up President Kennedy's murder.

Were heads spinning around like in The Exorcist?
