Katelyn Sabochik from the AFL-CIO Political Department, describes one of many of this past weekend’s get-out-the-vote events spearheaded by the AFL-CIO union movement.
On Saturday, United Steelworkers President Leo Gerard went door to door in Canton, Ohio, urging union members and their families to get out and vote Nov. 7. More than 10,000 volunteers in battleground states gave up a few hours of their Saturday morning to join Gerard and help the Labor 2006 program get out the union vote.
Before the walk began in Canton, we had a chance to sit down with USW President Gerard and talk candidly about the importance of the union vote in this year’s elections. Says Gerard:
Voting is now the equivalent of standing shoulder to shoulder with your fellow workers. Every single thing that matters to working people, every single thing that matters to the middle class has been under attack by this Republican controlled House and Senate.

Tomorrow’s election is about more than just politics as usual. Our country has been headed down the wrong path for six years, and this is our chance to turn things around for our children and grandchildren. Now is the time to stand shoulder to shoulder with your fellow working Americans and cast your vote for a better future.
