if we didn't have the same guy from a wealthy family who can't lose in power forever.

9. Democracy works even better then
You're just 1 of an average of 3 million people not represented by your Senator. Although in Texas, that average doesn't even come close. Talk about the power of one person to make a difference.

You? Complain? Who would listen?

I would consider that to be an issue.

As it stands I do not.

10. Couldn't if you wanted to
We have a political class that takes care of those choices for us.

Like you said, nobody really cares if we have a monopoly, or a dynasty, or any kind of concentration of power, as long as it's "our" team on the winning side.

16. We The People could indeed.
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 11:43 AM by thoughtanarchist
In this state, his re-election is predicated on the consent of the governed.

Concentration of power is not the same as a long running incumbency.

You seem confused about the meaning of monopoly and concentration of power and the significance of how these things effect our democracy.

When I hear people refer to the political process as if it's football game, the red flags go up.

I think some research is in order on your part.

I bet.

"You seem confused about the meaning of monopoly and concentration of power and the significance of how these things effect our democracy."

I think I have a fairly good idea of the meaning, and the effect. But, maybe I'm wrong. I could be biased.

Why don't you spell it out?

Especially how your (evidently negative) impression of Teddy fits in?

26. I have no negative impression of Kennedy
I don't even know him. I'm not even saying that he doesn't do a good job.

"Why don't you spell it out?"

Spell what out? That no matter who votes for whatever candidate they wish, we're still going to be an expanding empire, whose instituions are far more important than any individual human or non-human life, and that every sphere of human civilization will not stop growing until we have a problem so complex that it, just as every other complex problem at some point, has to collapse?

Was that the it you wanted spelled out? Something else? I need details people!

Not exactly high praise neither for my senior senator nor for our representational democracy.

You imply that Teddy is a problem. If you have no problem with him why be derisive toward him?

If you do have a problem with him why not be honest and state it clearly?

We're all free thinkers here. :dilemma: Don't be afraid to state your opinion.

14. Kennedy earns his incumbency
Although being part of a political dynasty got him into power, he wouldn;t have lasted so long if he wasn't popular with the voters in Massachusetts.

I don't disagree with your basic point in principle, in this case I only wish the Kennedy's still had that much power to influence what happens politically. We'd be a hell of a lot better off than we are now.

15. Not sure how those two aspects fit together
"Although being part of a political dynasty got him into power, he wouldn;t have lasted so long if he wasn't popular with the voters in Massachusetts."

with getting into power in the first place being a major benefit of dynastic control.

I know what you mean though. Although nobody runs against him, because the family history goes back a century(or more, I lost track), and it would be wasting money(and that family has plenty to waste).

I'd rather live in a "The Kennedy's"-less world, but then most of what I want never happens, so...

18. Since we're stuck with a class system....
Yes it would be better if wealth wasn't a factor. But at least the liberal noblesse oblige of the Kennedys far preferable to the "Fuck You, We're Rich and You're Not" brand of Bush-style oligarchs.

23. Consent of the governed
Like I said in a post above, if this were true, we wouldn't be "stuck" with a class system.

But yes, the gentle overlords are always better than the throw-you-off-a-bridge kind. And it seems as though we welcome them, I guess. If only we work hard enough, we can make it too.

17. As usual, I find myself envious of the good people ...
... of Massachusetts. You're even going to get a Democratic governor. As for me, I'm saddled with these three pustules:

Senator Johnny Isakson (R), Senator Saxby Chambliss (R), Governor Sonny Perdue (R)

20. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but New England
Kennedy may come from wealth but for many years he has served the people of this state well. I am proud to call him my senator and he does represent me. The 12 years I lived in RI his son represented me. Last year his other son helped my children and I stay warm when the weather was cold and oil was expensive. This year he will do the same.

Now, finally we will have a Democratic Governor and are one step closer to being completely blue.

I often wish the North East would break away from the rest of the country. Traveling away from here is like entering a foriegn country. Nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Hey you can always move here! Mitt has managed to drive away a good chunk of the population so we could use more good Dems.

22. Well, we share the same three AH's! I keep hoping Taylor will
give Sonny a run today. I was really surprised that my totally non-political husband pulled into the parking spot at the poll today, looked at the car next to us and said "I whish I had a can of spray paint to destroy that bumper sticker! I hate that guy!" The bumper sticker was a very non-descriptone that just said Sonny Perdue Georgia's Governor.

I later asked himwhat he had against Sonny because I have never really discussed him in the past...it's always Shruub. He wouldn't say. Only told me I just can't stand him!
