Wait'n in da line in Denver. Pic >>

Colorado gubernatorial candidate Bill Ritter (on the right) waits in line this morning in Denver. As much as two hour delays were reported at the new consolidated voting centers when the server that had the voters' registrations was tied up by its normal duty of checking city employees in for work. The Democratic party is in court right now asking to extend the voting hours tonight. Republicans hope to block that move saying that anyone who is in line at 7PM will get to vote anyway.

3. More Orwellian bullcrap.
Denver went from over 340 precints to just 55 "voting centers." The lines are blocks long. Colorado Trial Lawyers just sent out an email to all its members asking for volunteer Election Judges. It's total chaos here, folks. Cheers.

6. Consolidated = fewer.
Nice doublespeak word for cutting down the number of polling stations. I believed it was first used in the phrase "hospital consolidation". Or perhaps it was "school consolidation."

10. no, we had the same number of polling places--just no "vote in your correct pct
or go die" BS.. If you show up ANYWHERE in Denver, you get to vote.

It's a great improvement as far as access goes. You can get out of your chair at work and go down the block to vote, rather than having to journey back to your home neighborhood.

11. Ahh, now that's the kind of consolidation I can get behind.
Sorry, I jumped to the conclusion that they just cut down the number of stations. I shall go hide in embarassment now. :hide:

2. Gee, now why would the Repugs want to curtail...
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 03:30 PM by Kutjara
...voting hours? I can't think of a single reason. Oh, wait. Could it be that the only time that low paid workers have to vote is after they finish work? Nah, that couldn't be it.

And what the fuck is the district doing using the same server for employee timecards and voter verification? I've heard of penny-pinching, but that's ridiculous.

4. now why would a republican want to block that move?

if it's all the same as "anyway".

Sorry, I'd get thrown in jail. I'm here to vote, I'm registered to vote, I did what I was supposed to do to be able to vote, I followed the rules, you fucked up, and I am damn well going to vote.

And I would.

5. "Republicans hope to block that move"

7. This is why you need election day as a national holiday
in addition to everything that has been said about the voting machines.

8. So very very glad I voted early... (thursday after Halloween)
It isn't really the consolidation of voting ceters,(there are still many of them), as the technology that is blowing us away. We have a VERY VERY long ballot this year in CO and new Sequoia machines (that DO keep a paper record), but combined with their attempts to use a central server from laptop connections to check in voters, I knew we'd have a disaster in the making.

Well, Governor Ritter (God and valid election results willing), this better be on your key priorities to address in office.

9. And why would repukes want to block
an extension of voting time?? Whether voting went two days or an extra two hours, wouldn't it simply be great if more people are able to vote. Hmmm. Could it be they would rather not be troubled by voters at all?

12. Do you have a link to the story about the server being the same as
the one checking in city employees? Please provide. I need that proof of a 'multi-tasking' server being used in the election.

14. It looks like it was the server that employees use, not punch in.
According to the Denver Election Commission, problems arose early Tuesday morning because the Electronic Poll Books were on the same computer server as the city and county of Denver employees. When the employees came into work, it slowed the entire system down, officials said.

13. Voter registration on the same box as city employee timecards?!
WHAT THE MUTHAFUCKING FUCKING FUCK!!?? I swear to god people who are that IT-stupid--I work with some of them--who do this kind of ignorant shit should be charged with criminal neglect. I'm going to go out on limb here and suggest that if that multitasking server went tits-up, there's probably no failover, no near line backup, and maybe even no backup at all. People got to learn--and it may take an entire city losing its citizen's votes to teach them--that computers are not reliable machines; they will break and data will vanish. Jesus this pisses me off!!

a very democratic area. They're hoping to help Beauprez in the Gov's race.
