Defeated by Carnahan in 2000 for MO senator. Carnahan had died (accident, I think), but his name stayed on the ballot and he won. His wife, Jeanne Carnahan, was appointed to fill his term, but was defeated in 2002. She wasn't really the politician in the family.
And we got Asscrack for AG. Some would rather he was still AG instead of Gonzo...

in 2000. He lost to Mel Carnahan who died in a plane crash or something like that. His wife was appointed, and of course, Ashcroft went on to other things.

You give money to farmers who practice good conservation methods? Why is that a matter to be underwriten by the government?

The "government" underwrites all sort of conservation practices. Just about every recycling program in the US is subsidized by our government.
We do a lot more than this, check out www.mecklenburgconservation.com
