Dems to appoint corrupt officials?
This frustrates me to no end. The Dems have got to avoid putting anyone in powerful positions that have any questionable pasts. Hell the election was partly won on anti-corruption and now some sleazy names like Hoyer and Murtha surface, ready to move in when the other crooks move out?

Unacceptable.

Let them know.

MuckWatch: We Pick Our Favorite Dems
By Justin Rood - November 10, 2006, 1:20 PM
The Democrats swept into the majority in Congress vowing to fight the culture of corruption. Bad news for the muckraking biz, right? Thankfully, less-than-squeaky pasts don't appear to be a factor in the Dems' reasoning as they divvy up leadership posts and committee chairs. Here are our favorite Democrats poised to take key positions:

Rep. Alan Mollohan (WV): He's set to take the chair of the very appropriations panel in whose purse strings he has already entangled himself. (He has helped steer nearly $500 million in taxpayer money to his rural district, half of which has gone to five organizations Mollohan created with friends.) As a result, he's under FBI investigation. Enough said.

Rep. John Murtha (PA): Likely to chair the Defense Appropriations subcommittee. Murtha's been tagged as a shameless earmarker, spending tens of millions on projects nobody wants to benefit his friends and his district. He's already been caught on tape by the FBI explaining how he works scams, so at least if the Feds pick up his trail again, they'll know what to look for. With massive classified budgets and a long history of wasteful spending, this post is ripe for abuse. The FBI probe into its former chairman, Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA), attests to that. Murtha's also making a play for Majority Leader.

Rep. Alcee Hastings (FL): Tapped to chair the House Permanent Standing Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI). Without a serious intel/national security background, Hastings is said to have gotten up to speed on the material since joining the committee. Still, there's a congressional impeachment in his background, and charges of a $150,000 bribe from his days as a judge. In the wake of major corruption scandals in the intel world, is it so hard to find a little less complicated candidate to oversee them?

Rep. Steny Hoyer (MD): Hoyer, an appropriator, hopes to be House Majority Leader. Unfortunately, he has an addiction to special interest money, and eagerly courts K Street donors. Does that matter? He broke ranks with his party last year to vote in favor of a draconian bankruptcy bill that would bar many Americans from getting out from under debt, regardless of the circumstances which landed them there. Hoyer has taken around $120,000 from lending institutions this cycle. It's okay to slow-dance with 'em, Steny; but don't let them take you home.

9. The FBI tape is from the ABSCAM scandal of 26 years ago for
which Murtha was never prosecuted. His opponent, Diana Irey, tried to make a big deal of this
http://www.irey.com/news/contentview.asp?c=36382 but as near as I can tell, corporate media did not pick up on it so the tape story was probably not a big deal.

However, I do agree that the Dems better be squeaky clean in the leadership and unfortunately, Jack Murtha does not seem to qualify in that regard.

10. I have no idea
This is the first I've read anything about Murtha having any questionable background. But I am telling you that all the Republicans need is a little thread--just a little one and they will tug at it until everything unravels. Pelosi talked of having high ethics. If these guys are questionable at all I can just see Fox News and talk radio and the MSM putting this on the front page.

And where will that leave us in 2008?

Clearly corruption is an issue.

You think the Republicans aren't waiting for this?

The Dems can use these two years as a big stepping stone--or blow it all and send us back to square one.

They need to be very careful.

Think squeaky clean.

surface during the campaign, when it would have been helpful to the opposition? I would think they would have exploited the hell out of it, but no...

Hmm, could it be--they couldn't make any of it stick?

Edit: This same thing was posted yesterday from hobbyists forum. Find me a credible source and I'll stop having malicious fun with you, hmm?

19. Yeah, I get the feeling he will end up like DeLay in five-ten years from now

The only reason why the Republicans are more corrupt than us is because we didn't control anything. As a result, the networks and contacts on K-Street that offer the corrupting deals were not available to people like Hoyer. I'm sure even the Republicans in the early '90s had corruption...it just wasn't as pronounced because people like Wright and Rostenkowski controlled the House.

17. Is there a third choice in the Majority Leader election?
At minimum, Hoyer and Hastings need to be left out to dry. Pelosi actually vote to impeach Hastings during his bribery scandal.

20. Murtha is clean
Earmarks are sometimes necessary if you want to make sure money in the education budget goes to mentor new teachers and not to Bush's software company, for one thing. But it's also just how budgets work. Murtha tells the truth about it, that's a reason to keep him, not throw him over.

Hoyer on the other hand, is exactly as described which is why he shouldn't be majority leader at all.
