I'm making this quick, because I've got to get into the campaign office to get to work.
HOWEVER, I just wanted to let you all know that the event yesterday in Racine was absolutely AMAZING! This was billed as a forum on Jobs and the Economy. The room was packed to the brim. When Barbara Lawton, our Lt. Gov. entered the room, the crowd went wild. She has been working SO hard in support of Wes Clark, and she has earned the respect and love of a lot of Wisconsinites in the process. Then Governor Doyle and General Clark came in, and you'd have thought that the Beatles had entered the room! The crowd went absolutely nuts!
So, to make a long story short, Doyle introduced Clark, Clark gave a brief speech, and then took questions from the audience about jobs and the economy. He has such great plans for our country, and he knows how to express them so that we all can see that each one of us will be touched by the changes he will bring about.
The greatest thing yesterday was that I encouraged my Republican brother-in-law to come to this event. I know that it was difficult for him, and he joked that they almost turned him away at the door, because they recognized him as a thorn amongst all the roses. When the crowd was welcoming Lawton, Clark and Doyle, I could feel my brother-in-law, sitting next to me, getting caught up in the enthusiasm. As Clark began to speak about family values, patriotism and faith, and how they REALLY should affect our lives, my b-in-l was beginning to clap along, and I actually saw him nodding along with Clark at a few points. He squirmed a bit when some remarks were directed at bush, but he seemed to have lived through that.
After Clark was done speaking, my b-in-l said that he could see a lot of positive in what Clark had to say. So we went racing to the front of the room, where Clark was shaking hands on the way out. My b-in-l really wanted to get that handshake, and he was being reached around, over, under and practically through as everyone wanted to shake the hand of the next president. So I virtually grabbed the General (!) and said to him, "This man's father was a POW," and nodded towards my b-in-l. Well, that, of course, made Clark take notice, and he talked to him for a few moments, and gave him a great handshake.
We then spent some time talking with a friend who attended West Point with Wes Clark. And then, the crowning moment was when my little group actually stood back and watched while my b-in-l, Clark sign in hand, Clark button on his sweater, was being interviewed by the AP reporter, telling her why he thought that Clark had a lot to offer our country.
This, folks, is what it is all about. My b-in-l was going home to call his father and tell him about Wes Clark - about what this American Hero can do for our country.
The whole day has re-inspired me to absolutely bust my butt for General Clark. Enough whining and giving up from ALL of you! General Clark has given us our marching orders, and who are we to say we're too tired, or too discouraged, or too disillusioned. Get on the phone, get your signs and bumper stickers out there, write letters, and do it NOW!
