Oh great, that idiot Conyers is going to be chairman
Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., is set to become chair of the House Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over measures relating to law, courts and judges, constitutional amendments, and immigration.
_____

Oh great. He's going to be influential on matters of immigration and he has possibly the worst record of anyone in Congress on border security, reducing illegal immigration etc. Terrific. They're going to have to struggle with this dumbass to get anything done. His constituents may not have elected him for anything related to immigration, but that's what many were elected to deal with.

I know when you first listen to him, he speaks soooo slowly, itwoulds like he doesn't know what he talking about, but you'd be wrong! Try to listen to him a little more, and I think you'll find he's quite agood and intelligent man!

I'm thinking right now, he scares W to death!

I hae no idea what he;s going to do about immigration, but i suspect you will be pleasantly purprised!

___

Ok.

Number 1 - Rep. Conyers is a cosponsor of H.R. 3402. Title IX of H.R. 3402 loosens the rules governing visas for victims of trafficking and domestic violence and their families, resulting in an increase in chain migration.

Number 2 - Rep. Conyers cosponsored H.R. 1954 to increase chain migration by allowing the spouse, child, or parent of an alien who was granted posthumous citizenship based on military service to apply for permanent resident status.

Number 3 - Rep. Conyers cosponsored H.R. 4262, a bill to increase chain migration by increasing the number of family visas and exempting from the family-based visa ceiling all immediate relatives.

Number 4 - Rep. Conyers opposed an amendment to H.R.4300 that would have placed an overall ceiling on family, worker and lottery immigration of 630,000. The amendment was defeated 266 to 143. Immigration has increased to about one million a year due to Rep. Conyers rejection of this amendment.

Number 5 - Rep. Conyers voted as part of the Judiciary Committee against H.R. 2202 that would have shifted the primary focus of immigration policy to spouses and minor children from extended family. It would have set a ceiling of 330,000 on family-based immigration, thus reducing chain migration.
_____

He has about a 30 year record of opposing, absolutely, any sort of ceiling on immigration.

And most of what you say here, if true, looks ok to me. Make victims easier to immigrate, let families of dead military (troops who died for our country) apply for permanent resident status, increase family visas rather than breaking up families. I don't see a problem with this stuff, whether true or false.

Realize that there are 4 kinds of lies. Lies, damned lies, statistics and bills. Bills can be poorly written, can contain other things that bear no relation to what the bill is, etc.

And this is a problem for you? You think aliens who were granted citizenship POSTHUMOUSLY because they fought and died in OUR WARS being able to extend that to their LIVING immediate family is somehow a big problem? Why do you hate our troops?

My politics are more left than yours will ever be. But I'm also concerned about illegal immigration, just like the majority of Americans are.

That's possibly because I live directly across the border from Mexico and am confronted with it 24 hours a day. Where do you live? Vermont? Why is it always the people that live somewhere like Oregon or Iowa that are so ignorant on this?

29. I don't think so
Virtually every one of the bills or amendments you posted Conyers' position on had Mr. Conyers on the side of treating immigrants and their families humanely. Not opening the border to anyone who wants in, just treating people humanely. In particular the one allowing the immediate family of a SLAIN US SOLDIER who is awarded citizenship posthumously to APPLY for permanent residence.

My friend that is what being a Democrat is all about. If you have an issue with that you are most certainly not to the left of many here, I don't care how much you believe it.

I would submit to you that living where you do may give you a bit of bias. All of the legislation you connected Conyers to deals with legal immigration, while I suspect that what you most have an issue with is illegal immigration. If your issue is with people who come here legally you have much larger problems than John Conyers.

__

The public opinion survey, conducted by an independent research firm commissioned by a Washington-based public policy group, shows immigration as a top issue for American voters.

"For 53 percent of the electorate, they say it is the top issue or one of their top-three issues," said Kellyanne Conway. "Immigration has never had this kind of primacy in previous elections."

Sixty eight percent of respondents said US immigration levels are too high, and just two percent said they are too low. Seventy percent said they are less likely to vote for candidates that favor increasing legal immigration, and 64 percent said they would back measures that result in voluntary or involuntary repatriation of illegal immigrants.

She says her poll provided a third option: strict law enforcement that makes it practically impossible for undocumented workers to secure employment and support themselves in the United States, leaving them no choice but to leave of their own accord.

"We find that when you add that third way, that is the policy prescription that has the most support," said Conway.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/elections/bal-te.immigration18oct18,0,3487574.story?coll=bal-home-headlines

But there's little sign that most voters are listening. People are torn on the complicated issue, and many say it's low on their list of concerns this election year, behind the war and economic worries. Public polls show no more than about one-fifth of voters name it among their top concerns.

47. Let's see if I can post before this is locked
and you're tossed out on your can.

Number one: Conyers acts to promote LEGAL immigration in ways that will decrease illegal immigration. If people can bring their families across LEGALLY, there is less motivation for those same families to sneak in.

Number two: Legal immigrants are not bad for the economy. They can attain legal work, pay taxes, and join unions to improve democratic movements within their respective industries. They become Americans.

Number three: America was built by immigrants. Dollars to donuts YOU are yourself descended from immigrants from one place or another.

Number four: There is a undercurrent of bigotry in anti LEGAL immigrant positions, particularly when the targets are non-whites. Unacceptable.

Conyers has voted against any, let me repeat, any type of ceiling on immigration. He has also voted to increase legal immigration, which is in direct conflict with what the majority of Americans want as the policy. They don't support an increased level of immigration. Conyers does.

69. Hugh Moran, of course, he's that great chum from that other place
Free Republic or something. He stops in from time to time to kid about how Republicans are going to wipe the floor with us in the elections, how we hate America, and how we're all destined for hell. Such a charmer, that man.

57. LEGAL immigration isn't really our problem, now is it?
ILLEGAL immigration is.

I have no problem with people coming to this country legally just like my forefathers did. Well, the Celtic ones, anyway. Some of my ancestors were already here.

Immigrants BUILT America. I'm not willing to slam the door in the face of anyone willing to come here to forge a better life by legal means.

Yes, we all know the history of the US. It was "built by immigrants." Fine.

And just like your forefathers had some degree of control over who they let in the country, so you should have the same right. You don't agree with that?

Facts please, not a discussion into what we want, or what public wants. If you give a statement like this, you need to back it up.

80. How do you judge?
A lot of people, when my great grandparents came to America, didn't really want those "fucking drunken micks stinking up the place."

They came anyway. As did the Chinese. And the Japanese. And the Italians. And the Cubans. And the Puerto Ricans.

And now they're Americans.

Who the fuck am I, or YOU, to say who does or does not belong here? As long as they're willing to come here legally, and work for the benefit of all, I say "welcome to America."

That's the only reasonable criteria. Not where they're from, or who their parents are.
