Lawsuit filed against Rumsfield? Could this be another reason why he was fired?
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 02:02 PM by madmunchie

Attorneys with the Center for Constitutional Rights filed a war crimes lawsuit today in Germany against outgoing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and other high-ranking U.S. officials, for their role in the torture of prisoners in Iraq and Guantanamo. We go to Berlin to speak with CCR president Michael Ratner.

The Center for Constitutional Rights filed a criminal complaint in Germany today against outgoing Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. The complaint requests that the German Federal Prosecutor open an investigation - and ultimately, a criminal prosecution - looking into the responsibility of high-ranking U.S. officials for authorizing war crimes in the name of the so-called "War on Terror.

1. No, he was fired 'cause W is in over his head and called
Dad for help. Dad sent Baker, Gates and others and told W to shut up and sit down while the grown ups figure out how to minimize the damage.

2. I think
You are mistaking cause with effect. It was filed because Rumsfeld no longer enjoys immunity since he is leaving.

3. Oh, so they couldn't have filed without Rumsfield being out of office?
Well then, what about the immunity issue when Bush leaves office?

6. I thought there WAS some 'war crimes' case filed against Cheney, Rumsfield, etc.
last year TWICE. Once by I thought Germany already, and once somewhere in Scandanavia. Weren't papers also filed against Chimpy in Canada last year? This is not "new" to my knowledge, only that NOW since Rumsfield's no longer a member of the Admin., some of his "legal protection" probably is gone.

9. the difference this time
is that Karpinski is now a witness for the prosecution instead of a defendant. Rummy lost immunity. New judge, and that the US has not done anything about it, therefore they can proceed.

4. Correct ! Disgruntled Vet. And welcome to DU.
I'm curious as to how this administration plans on handling this, i believe a pardon from W want be suffice to keep Rummy from the Hague.

8. Thanks for the welcome
The court claims universal jurisdiction over crimes, but the reality is all that will come of this is Rumsfeld won't be able to vacation in Germany. Or deposit his halliburton funds in Das Bank. Not that I am pooh poohing it, but don't get too excited. this is a dog and a pony short of a good dog and pony show.
