1. I don't know...but I read here that someone I think the state was Wy.
that the Senator was very sick and might be replaced...and that a Dem would be his replacement...

that the replacement be from the same party as the individual being replaced.

6. Really?
That hasn't been the position of others who have posted about this. Can you link something regarding their law?

8. Anyone can have a "position,"
no matter how uncomfortable; however, here's the facts:

(i) If a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or in any state office other than the office of justice of the supreme court and the office of district court judge, the governor shall immediately notify in writing the chairman of the state central committee of the political party which the last incumbent represented at the time of his election under W.S. 22-6-120(a)(vii), or at the time of his appointment if not elected to office. The chairman shall call a meeting of the state central committee to be held not later than fifteen (15) days after he receives notice of the vacancy. At the meeting the state central committee shall select and transmit to the governor the names of three (3) persons qualified to fill the vacancy. Within five (5) days after receiving these three (3) names, the governor shall fill the vacancy by temporary appointment of one (1) of the three (3) to hold the office.

2. .
More importantly, is there anyone we'd really like to have? At the moment, I can't think of one.
But maybe I don't know those who are often named well enough.

3. Wont happen. But most likely are:
1) Susan Collins - Maine
2) Olympia Snowe - Maine
3) Arlen Specter - Pennsylvania
4) Joe Liebermann in '08 - when he realizes it's best to rejoin the Dems again.

5. Our Maine Senators blow with the wind
but I'm not sure they would ever switch parties. As I've said in other threads, if Hay Bright had given Snowe a bit more of a scare last week, it might have happened. However, getting 3/4 of the vote in a year when most Repubs were washed over by the big blue wave did nothing to shake Snowe's confidence and probabaly made Collins feel a bit safer for next time as well.

7. There will always be opportunists.

When they see which way the political wind is blowing they will change their affiliation. Myself, I wouldn't trust people like that.

Some may wait until the prez elections to see how strong the wind is blowing, but some surely will.
