General Abizaid Smacks Down McCain’s Plan To Send More U.S. Troops To Iraq

Today at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, CentCom commander Gen. John Abizaid rejected McCain’s calls for increased U.S. troop levels in Iraq, saying that he “met with every divisional commander, Gen. Casey, the core commander, Gen. Dempsey” and asked them if bringing “in more American troops now, (would) add considerably to our ability to achieve success in Iraq and they all said ‘no.’”Watch it:

7. That goes without saying.
I don't want anybody thinking that Abizaid's not full of shit because he disagrees with McCain.

Which he actually doesn't, because Abizaid just testified we do need more troops. He also just testified that we don't need more troops. Which is basically what led me to conclude he's full of shit.

3. McCain's full of more shit.
If I'd needed any more proof that McCain is just Bush in another incarnation, his wanting to send yet MORE troops to that shithole would've been it.

However, I hadn't needed any more proof of the above so I wish McCain would just for once SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GO AWAY.

4. Actually McCain won out on that one

There isn't enough troops to secure Baghdad and Anbar at the same time so Abizaid says we should just focus on Baghdad and let Anbar rot. From a purely military standpoint Abizaid is supporting a wack a mole policy.

8. no, read the statement closely

Abizaid is saying the opinion in the generals' ranks is that what we do now doesn't matter anymore to the outcome. Anbar or no Anbar.

9. McCain was calling for 20,000 more troops before
they sent the additional 15,000 troops into Baghdad. He even said that no more than that would be needed. A few thousand troops is not the solution, Iraq is in a civil war and the presense of American troops is exacerbating the situation.

6. Not to mention that
he made the following stmt today "sectarian violence is down from the high point in August"... and you just know that's got to be crap. The violence levels in Iraq cycle from season to season, depending on a lot of things. But you can't come out and say anything definitive about sectarian violence trends.

His remarks today smacked of "Stay the course".

10. it's called 'lip service'

And yes, at this very moment, Iraq is where Al Qaeda has most of its violent sorts concentrated. Not that this matters in the longer term, but it allows for this 'central front' talking point to be a half-truth. Abizaid can't go out and contradict every stance of the Bush Administration at once- that's nonproductive, it merely means he gets fired and the Administration hardens its views and replaces him with another Delud-o-bot who starts out with the premise that what the Administration says is necessary and needs implementation.
