Everything they say has to be heard from that perspective. For Abizaid to say anything else would be to admit defeat, which would be the end of his military career.

The real test is whether Congress is able to ignore him. If congress accepts that there is no way to succeed in Iraq then Abizaid's assessment becomes nothing more than smoke and mirrors-- a convenient deception to keep him in the administration's good graces for a while longer. Congress must look beyond Abizaid's testimony and put an end to the madness-- the generals are never going to do that, or even advocate it.
