Poll question: A Dark Horse Dem Governor? Whom Do You Like In '08? |
|
We had a huge victory this year in the Governor's races. We picked up seats in New York, Ohio, Massachusetts, Colorado, Arkansas and Maryland.
Whether we like it or not, the "curse of the Senators" really exists as far as Presidential politics go. In the last fifty years, only one sitting Senator has succesfully made his way to the WH: Kennedy in 1960.
In contrast, four sitting (or ex) Governors have pulled it off: Carter, Reagan, Clinton, Junior Satan.
Many believe that nominating a Governor or an Ex-Governor is the way to go for '08.
So, who fits the bill? I have deliberately left off the newly elected Governors from this poll, as they will have only been serving two years and none will presumably mount an effort in '08.
We have a lot of talent in the State Houses. Many of them relatively unknown.
Please tell us whom you support and why.
Note: I know many of you are fans of Gore and Clark. But, that is not what this poll is about. Your input is more than welcome to discuss Governors, ex-Governors and their prospects.

2. I cast my vote for Bredesen |
|
because Phil Bredesen is an immensely popular Democratic governor of a conservative state, Tennessee, and was recently re-elected with over 68% of the vote. The last three Democratic Presidents were governors or ex-governors of a southern state (Carter and Clinton), or a Vice President from a southern state (Lyndon Johnson). He has a very pro-people agenda and apparently appeals to a mass audience.

Do any of these women and men have enough of a network to raise sufficient funds to be viable in the primaries?

I would imagine that in order to be viable candidates, since most of them start out with less visibility than, say, Clinton or Edwards Or Obama, if any of them decide to make the race, they will have to declar sooner rather than later. Which makes me realize I forgot Vilsack. The only one of them who has officially tossed his hat into the ring. My bad.

11. Bredesen does - he's personally wealthy and as one of few |
|
Dems in red states, he's attractive to the party, but he's said he's not running. The same is true for Barry Schweitzer.

9. I agree with the other posters |
|
I don't know enough about the governors to make an informed decision.
But what I have heard about Schweitzer is terrific. Anyone who takes his dog everywhere with him is OK by me. However he hates Washington, thereby ruling him out.
