Clark's musical error? Blew off Little Rock band Evanescence
Edited on Mon Feb-09-04 03:25 PM by mouse7
Clark was trying to reach a younger audience, and the band that won best new artist at the Grammy's, Evanescence, is from Little Rock and has a lot of "anthemic" mainstream tunes just begging to be used in a campaign.

How could Clark play stuff like Journey and blow off a great hometown connection to some tunes that would have definitely played better to younger audiences.

(By the way, I don't know which category this goes in. I think it fits here just barely more than others.)

1. I gotta agree
and I have never heard Evanescence. However, Clark's choice of Journey leaves him VERY suspect in my mind. I'd have preferrednearly anything to Journey.

21. lol Xultar. thanks I now have
nay nay nan nan nay stuck in my head, and that is a sound I never wanted to hear again! Yes, good pop voice, but horrid material. Kinda makes you want to light your bic, hold it high, and sway gently back and forth while some guy with a really bad haircut sings nonsense lyrics while a cheesey synth plays 3 notes over and over. :P

6. Here's some links..
Clark could have had songs from the soundtrack Daredevil playing as he entered, and gotten away with it because the kids are from Little Rock. It's too bad.

35. I'm with you...

I'm older, but Evanescence is one of the few newer bands I really sat up and took notice of. (I bought the Daredevil sountrack just for them.)

I do like some Journey, but then they were big when I was growing up, it's more nostalgia for me. Journey just isn't "big" enough sound-wise for someone with Clark's presence and charisma. My two cents.

2. That band is a flash in the pan...
People are already starting to not care about them. He'd be better off embracing the Madonna endorsement than bothering himself with the Romeo Void of 2003.

Besides that band is heavy on the Christian tip so they may very well not be interested.

Like it or not, that sort of thing becomes an issue.
Also, their style doesn't suit Wes. Some Johnny Cash might work for him, perhaps.

14. The Evangelical Christians are overtly pissed at them
Calling them traitors, Judases, etc. for doing mainstream music.

I don't think there is an agenda here. A LOT of kids started playing music at church. These guys are young, too. Lead singer is 20, I think. So they just moved out of their parents houses. Now we see if they grow.

47. LMAO
I thought that was a frisbee for a moment. That's awesome.

Just so you know, Hey Ya, despite being a great song, isn't exactly appropriate for a major presidential candidate. The lyrics, "Just wan't to make you cumma" being prominent among them, don't exactly fly in Peoria. That may do it for Gert, but I don't think that works so well for the American people.

Shake it like a polaroid picture...all the way to the White House. Come on, people, Outkast just won the Album of the Year Grammy! I think my grandma has a Journey 8 track somewhere still. Let's get with the times. I'm not a big Evanescence fan, but they are more appropriate for 2004 than Journey! And I agree, we need to push the Madonna endorsement with some of her tunes (within reason). George Jones is already doing commercials for him in Tennessee! Let's Rock Wes!

I happen to enjoy the music of Evanescence but maybe you should have wrote to his campaign headquarters and made mention of this. Perhaps they weren't aware of the group being from Little Rock, I know I wasn't.

36. Considering how often bands from Little Rock go multi-Platinum...
...I would imagine their quick rise to the top, if anything, has been over-documented in Little Rock. As a matter of fact, I would imagine it's pretty hard find a place in Little Rock right now that their music wouldn't be getting played 24/7.

I guess the lead singer of Cold is in some desperate need of rehab, and refuses to go get it. So there's a new guitarist, but Evanescence has started to write for the next album.

I just happened to noticed you have this red hot band that had a songs on 9 figure box office superhero flick. The band just won a Grammy. The band is from Wesley Clark's hometown. The band writes mainstream anthems.

Seems like a perfect match.

49. Pardon me, but is Christian agenda responsible for Daredevil?
Ben Affleck acting? Kevin Smith with a walk on and writing a Daredevil comic book storyline?

Let me repeat that... Ben Affleck and Kevin Smith of DOGMA fame?

The kids in Evanescence are just kids that used to sing church stuff while in high school. They are out of that scene now, and are clearly mainstream now.

I'm from the South, and ran 3000 miles to escape the South. There's probably very few more wary of the Christian agenda on this board. However, you do what you have to do to get out. They probably had the Evangelical Christian church shoved down their throats by their parents. The minute they had an opportunity to get out, they did. Amy Lee is all of 20. She just moved out of her parent's house in Little Rock. She'll grow.

"Don't Stop" was a good one, and Kerry's "You've Got a Friend" is a good one.

Clark's already shown some hipness musically in the debates, but not everyone was watching, so maybe Evanescence could help somewhat.

50. It actually surprising how often campaign songs are referenced.
This isn't a new thing. Campaign songs are an old tradition.

Just pointing out Clark had the opportunity to be associated with a very hot new band and play music from a superhero movie and get away with it because of the hometown connection to the band.

If a candidate can get away a subconscious connection to a comic book hero, why not?

Evanscensce are a bunch of thumpers. Like 'Creed' or 'Jars of Clay' they are regurgitated 'real' music but with all the 'bad' stuff taken out. Yeah, and their duet with that other timeless group 'Linkin Park' was one for the ages.

gag.

Just go watch the South Park episode where Cartman, Token and Butters starts a Christian Rock band - it's dead on:

"It's easy, you just replace the words, 'baby' and 'honey' with Jesus"
