Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails???

The above link is to a thread about bringing an end to touch screen voting and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPAT). Obviously we want the touch screen voting left behind, but what's with the VVPAT? Why do we want an end to those? Someone educate me.

This link defines the VVPAT.

1. It's not the vvpat's that are the problem - we want ALL touch screens gone, Period.
The paper trail is better than no paper trail, but it's still not adequate. We want to get rid of all touch screen voting machines entirely.

2. An overview, with pointer
I found the following near the top of the front page of http://bradblog.com -tg

A so-called "voter-verified paper trail" on Sarasota's touch-screen systems would not have solved the problem in Florida. I'll have more on this issue in the coming days, but suffice to say for now: Paper trails, such as they are used with DRE/Touch-Screen systems do not work. Voters don't verify them, elections officials don't count them, they are not accurate, they can be gamed, they jam the printers which leads to voters being turned away without being able to vote…among just a few of the reasons.

VotersUnite.org has now come out with a complete statement on why even they are no longer willing to support voter verified paper audit trails (VVPAT) and thus, they will not support Rep. Rush Holt's otherwise well-intentioned HR550 legislation as long as it allows for VVPAT. Neither will we. More on all of that soon as well.

4. Our SoS in Ky is now calling for a paper trail.
We didn't have many problems, but he wants to ensure that there is not a loss in faith in our elections.

Adding equipment that would allow voters to view a paper version of their ballot through a glass window would cost about $1,000 per voting machine.

Grayson said the equipment could be purchased using some of about $15 million in leftover money the federal government had provided to help the state convert to electronic voting machines.

Two Democratic lawmakers from Louisville, Rep. Mary Lou Marzian and Darryl Owens, said adding a paper trail is a no-brainer. "I think that is a small price to pay for voter confidence," Marzian said.

BTW, we use the Hart eSlate.

BTW2, that's my cousin who is quoted in the clip above.
