Newt Gringrich : Free Speech needs to be curtailed to prevent terrorism
"Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich yesterday said the country will be forced to reexamine freedom of speech to meet the threat of terrorism.

Gingrich, speaking at a Manchester awards banquet, said a "different set of rules" may be needed to reduce terrorists' ability to use the Internet and free speech to recruit and get out their message.

"We need to get ahead of the curve before we actually lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade," said Gingrich, a Republican who helped engineer the GOP's takeover of Congress in 1994."

2. Unfortunately, to an asshole like Newt,
....any speech which is not in line with whatever BS the WH is putting out in his little mind he sees as supporting terrorism.

4. How will curtailing free speech prevent terrorism?
I just don't see the connection. How would anyone decide what kind of speech might prevent or cause terrorism? What speech does he want to curtail -- the speech of KKK? of the Muslim religion? instructions on how to make weapons?

What curtailment of free speech could have prevented 9/11? Should we have stopped teaching people how to fly planes, stop teaching engineering or urban planning in our schools? Would that have prevented the terrorists from figuring out how to plan terrorist attacks? What information that was available then could have stopped the terrorists? Should we have been keeping the location of the twin towers in New York City or the Pentagon or the Capitol Building secret?

Gingrich's comments are just so irrelevant. Why does he still get media attention?

7. "They" seem to be very committed to the
shredding of the U.S. Constitution. When will they stop? I wonder if "they" consider DUers terrorists? Probably.

13. Newt isn't talking about terrorism
If you substitute the word "freedom" for "terrorism, and "American citizens" for "terrorists" you'll get what he really means. For Republicans free speech, like democracy, is not a good thing.

15. Welcome to DU.
This hypocrite can exit himself from Washington right quick. We don't curtail constitutional rights in this nation to suit your needs, Newton.
