Poll question: O.K...one last one. Vilsack or Hillary Clinton?
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 09:11 PM by Clarkie1
The governor or Iowa (he's already declared) or the coy Senator from New York?

Edit: for those who need to do a background check...http://www.tomvilsack08.com/

6. Some are saying that Vilsack is just a Hillary proxy so she doesn't have to contest Iowa
That's why I haven't voted in this poll - I'm not entirely convinced that a vote for Vilsack isn't just a vote by proxy for Hillary.

20. The basis for this theory is BC's run.
Harkin ran in Iowa so bill did not waste time there. Since Harkin was not viable it made Iowa moot. Clark had hoped to somewhat follow this strategy since CW was that it was sewed up by Dean. When Kerry won the dynamic was changed dramatically. Another couple of interesting points are the fact many ground workers in Iowa attributed a robocall by Mrs. Vilsack days before the election to Kerry's victory. The other is the possible run by Obama who is said to be talking with Kerry's campaign staff from Iowa and his contacts with fellow Illinoisan and Edward's campaign manager Axelrod.

9. Oh, I'm sure they are
I think if that's indeed the plan, Iowans will smell it immediately.

But it DOES make sense - Vilsack is the chairman of the DLC and everyone in America knows the only state he would have a ghost of a chance of placing well in is Iowa. It makes sense that the Clinton crowd might see him as a Hillary proxy to drain votes away from whoever the anti-Clinton candidates are in order to strengthen Hillary's hand in New Hampshire, Nevada, and other primaries.

Sorry, it's just that any criticism of my heritage--considering I'm adopted and NOT white--is taken personally....even if, historically, I AGREE with you. (I took your image as a slight to Iowa.....I truly apologize of I mistook your intentions!)

It's just that I have to keep reiterating as someone from Iowa: I AM NOT A HICK!!! :-)

31. I think that's really questionable
I don't see any reason to automatically put Vilsack in Hillary's camp. Vilsack was mentioned as high on the list of possible Kerry VP picks in 2004, with some rumors having him or Clark being Kerry's personal choice. And although Vilsack, as Gov. of Iowa declined to endorse a candidate in his state's primary, his wife came out and endorsed Kerry - which was certainly something of a nod and a wink.

Vilsack has been mentioned as a possible candidate for 2008 for a few years now. It's the blue Gov. of a red state thing - in most of Vilsack's tenure as Governor, he's had to deal with a Republican controlled legislature - it's the same argument that was used for Warner... I really don't see anything in this beyond that.

There's been a lot of conspiracy mongering coming from a few members of the Kerry camp lately... I'm trying to keep an open mind about this stuff. Difficult to do sometimes in our insular little DU world, but maybe Vilsack just wants to be President...

32. Well, of course, it's just a theory
Maybe Vilsack has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. I have nothing against the man. I do have something against Hillary Clinton, however, after her cute little stunt joining the GOP in shivving Kerry in the back for the "joke." It's very obvious she wanted to try to take out a potentially dangerous '08 threat early in the game, and I lost tons of respect for her over it.

Vilsack, who knows? Maybe you're right and he is trying to fill the Warner niche, but I would think he's got to know he doesn't have much of a chance. He polls crappy in IOWA. Granted polls mean nothing at this point, but I just can't imagine Vilsack standing much of a chance. If Richardson announces, Vilsack's actual chances will be DOA.

10. I can guarantee you one thing... General Clark will be in Iowa a LOT !!!
After his interview on Big Ed on 11/20/06 (still on the archive) I'm convinced he's running!

Only this time -- he plans on doing it right.

He blew it last time entering too late and skipping Iowa.. Won't happen this time around.

22. I Must be the Only One Who Liked This Poll
because it forced me to carefully think about two candidates I don't particularly support.

And having done that, I have to vote Clinton, hands down. From what I can see, she is much stronger and more competent. That more than makes up for the Republican smears. Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Falwell are not going to be swaying as many votes in a couple of years. If you liked the Mondale and Dukakis candidacies, you'll love Vilsack.

If we're going to have some DLC clown on the ticket, it may as well be one with the name recognition to get elected.

Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 01:27 AM by Withywindle
Because if I have to pick between two empty suits, I'll pick the one whose suit is shaped like mine, and I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Never mind that between the two, she actually DOES have more experience of what being POTUS might actually be like. I disagree with her on so many positions, but that doesn't even matter here, since neither of them are very relevant to me.

Given a case like this where I don't have much faith in either as an individual, I WILL in fact vote for the one who can inspire half the population in a way we've never been inspired before. I WILL vote for a bland white woman over a bland white man, simply because the US has never had a female head of state, and it's loooong past time. We lag behind both such irrelevant backwaters as the UK and Germany :sarcasm: and such beacons of feminist enlightenment as India and Pakistan :sarcasm: in that regard.

I hate the dynasty factor, and I'm tired of Bushes and Clintons. But she *does* have more relevant experience than Vilsack, sorry!

I'm gonna hold my nose and vote with a lot of little girls in mind. Though given my choice, I want the first woman Pres to be Nancy Pelosi because both Bush and Cheney are dragged off to prison. :D

I doubt he's the strongest person the Dems could run, but at least he wouldn't motivate the wingnuts to turn out in droves on Election Day to vote AGAINST the Democratic ticket.

28. Vilsack is as dull
as the Iowa landscape is flat....

But he does have an inspiring early life story. And he has managed Iowa well from what I've heard. The state usually ranks pretty high on most indicators (health care, education, etc).
