Hey geeks! Can I get around the keystroke police by doing this? |
|
At work, they asked us not to use the internet for personal reasons. Well, The management is right wing. I have been surfing DU, Rude Pundit, etc at night and saving a file to CD-RW. Then taken to work, I just read on the file when I need a break, and during lunch. If the keystroke police log my keystrokes, they will see a whole lotta "page down" strokes. I feel sure IT is surfing the internet for their own personal reasons, and do not want to spend much time doing PCAnywhere or any of that stuff. I have been in IT and that kind of thing is very boring. But I don't want them to know I am spending some time each day reading about the chimpster. Could the get a lot of info out of my arrowing down through a file?

1. Don't do it - they can log files and where you've been and don't |
|
have to count keystrokes!
Ask management if it's OK if you browse the Net during lunch and breaks. Most companies don't mind as long as you're not going to porn sites or Googling about how to kill your spouse.

3. I click on Printer Friendly Format at the top, execute Ctrl+A (select all) |
|
Ctrl+C (copy), Alt+Tab (switch screens to my text file), Ctrl+V (paste clipboard into the text file). It goes very fast and I have a whole day to read the file, the next day between tasks. Lotsa entertainment.

4. How do you open this file? |
|
Word, for example?
From your brief description, I would suspect they log and keep at least a temporary backup of every file accessed on every machine on their network. Just accessing the CD probably creates a log entry somewhere.
Whatever the case, everything you open leaves a trail of some sort. You're probably okay unless they're looking at you already, or if they ever do in the future, wanting to find something to use against you.

5. I doubt they log local file access |
|
I'm a network engineer, and I just don't see that as practical. Logs are generally made of network access, that is, they know when you connect to a server somewhere on the Internet. But even that becomes impractical to audit unless you have something like a 1:5 ratio of IT to other staff. And if they are paranoid enough to put a keylogger on your machine, they are also paranoid enough to have half of IT audit the other half.
Incidentally, keyloggers are a horrible, horrible security vulnerability and have no place on any serious network.

Just mentioning the possibility. Our company logs all activity with external devices, of which they include CD/DVD access in the definition. What they do with them, or how long they keep them, I don't know. I very much doubt they actually audit them, unless they're looking for something specific.
