5. Healthcare
I doubt we'll be able to do anything about it with * still in office, but it is one of the most crucial issues for poor and lower classes in America. Plus, it would be great to get the Republicans on record as opposed to universal healthcare for '08.

12. indeed -- the *work* of this congress is multifaceted
we need to CHEER them on to start cleaning up the mess of the last 6 years and lay the groundwork for the next admin to continue that work...

7. Not at OUR expense...
I want to see Bushco investigated and thrown to the wolves. However, I really want to see this country back on track and taking care of humanitarian problems here at home and in the world. IF an investigation causes us to not take care of our own people for even one second longer, then it's not worth it. Hopefully, the new democratic congress will be comprised of multitaskers!

8. THE CHURCH WILL BE SEPARATE FROM THE STATE
on large billboards throughout the country. I wouldn't mind a big ole discussion about the tax exempt status of church's and a clearly defined notion of what defines church involvement in elections; something chuckleheads can understand and abide by.

9. "chuckleheads" -- heh heh -- :)
i thought about adding that, but couldn't come up with the right wording -- seemed to cross over into "culture war" territory which i ALSO wanted to add, but couldn't think of a way.

thanks for including that in the discussion!

10. I seriously believe
the greatest threat to our nation is christian zealots with political power. We can destroy anyone else militarily (when in the hands of a competent commander in chief) but dobson and his ilk want to replace the constitution with the bible and are attempting to do so without firing a shot. They got a recent setback but that won't stop them.

Nice post ya got going.

20. Yes! I want options and I want to know that a particular candidate
is NOT going to be shoved down our throats. I've been over-reacting on Hillary threads because I feel as if there is an "inevitability" buzz building and that makes me VERY VERY VERY angry.

Options. Know my voice will be heard -- along with everyone else's voice. I calm down a lot.

And I'm thinking heavy fines and jail time not just a slap on the wrist like impeachment.

Just look at all the misery they have caused and are still causing.

thanks for bringing that up... meebee a vote for "Corporate Re-regulation" counts in the direction of "workers rights"??

What are the sorts of legislation ("things that congress does") that fall into these categories..."

Minimum Wage (first 100 hours we're told! i've got my fingers crossed).
Fair Trade and/or Protecting American Jobs
Affordable Child Care

here's a biggie...

REFORM Bankruptcy Laws! this is going to be huge in 2007 as foreclosures continue to skyrocket.

38. Agreed.
Offshoring/inshoring is a major problem in this country, leading to our job shortage. I fear too many people don't know just how bad the economy is until they lose their job, and can't find another.

31. Weird. I would have assumed that Going out of Iraq would win.
This is so important.

The other issue that is extremely important because it has implication on nearly everything else is the environment, starting by a serious reflexion on global warming and energy issues.

32. Other: NCLB.
It's up for reauthorization then. With Democratic faithfuls like Miller and Kennedy determined to keep all the worst parts of that pos legislation, it will be a big fight. That will be my focus for '07. I hope the Democratic Party will join me; if not, we're headed for divorce.

I sincerely believe that with campaign finance reform and and a trustworthy, verifiable voting procedure, you'd never see another right-wing repug majority any time, anywhere.
Honestly.

Then, eventually, we'd have everything in your list.

36. corporate contributions
Abolish contributions to political parties and campaigns by for profit corporations. They are what stand in the way of nearly every other issue, including the war in iraq, health care, environment, election reform, alternative energy, workers rights, outsourcing, imigration policy, tax policy, media regulation, net neutrality, credit industry regulation, etc, etc, etc,... you name it!

37. I didn't vote because I have a LIST of issues that MUST be addressed!
FIRST is Election reform because without that, nothing else really matters.

Second is health care reform. The insanity in the entire health care industry not only harms those who can't afford any insurance, but it costs jobs and even harms those who have insurance (for what it's become). I have insurance, and I broke my anklein Sept. AFTER the ins. paid all their portion of the bills, I STILL OWE $2,500!!!!

Third, fix the darn doughnut hole problem!

Fourth, force the admin to really deal with the Iraq mess.

Of course the list goes on, but if the new Congress can resolve those four, I will consider them successful!

BTW, I must congratulate this new Congress for one IMPORTANT job already acccomplished. Hoyermade the new Congressional calendar, and everyone has to actually work FIVE DAYS A WEEK! The days of the $168,000 part time job are OVER! Thank you Stenny!
