Gore on Oprah: Global Warming 101

For the past 20 years, former Vice President Al Gore has been traveling the world speaking about global warming, a passion of his since college. In 2006, his lecture was made into the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Now available on DVD, this is the third highest grossing documentary of all time.

In his lectures, book and documentary, Gore explains that if we continue to ignore what we are doing to our planet, we risk destroying the very future of our civilization. And the former vice president says that we must act before it's too late.

"Some of the leading scientists are now saying we may have as little as 10 years before we cross a kind of point-of-no-return, beyond which it's much more difficult to save the habitability of the planet in the future," Gore says.

"I believe that everybody should see ," Oprah says. "You should get it for your friends and family this holiday season."

What causes global warming?

First, it's important to understand that the atmosphere is extremely thin. "The late Carl Sagan used to say if you had a globe with a coat of varnish, the thinness of that varnish relative to the globe is similar to the thinness of the atmosphere to the planet," Gore says.

That atmosphere, which is just a few miles above the Earth's surface, traps some amount of the sun's energy, or light radiation, as it hits the Earth. "That's a good thing, the natural trapping of , because it keeps the temperatures within comfortable boundaries," Gore says. While other planets are either much too hot or much too cold, Earth is just like Goldilocks—just right for life.

As humans add pollution like carbon dioxide (also known as CO2) into the air, the Earth's atmosphere becomes thicker. The thicker atmosphere traps more of the reflected radiation, raising overall temperature. This process is what we call "global warming." Other major factors adding to global warming, Gore says, include the burning of coal, oil, gasoline and forests.

One place that already feels the effects of the melting North Pole is Shishmaref, a small Alaskan village just south of the Arctic Circle. The Inupiak people have lived here for generations, but in the past 30 years, they've witnessed dramatic changes.

As illustrated in the documentary Everything's Cool, warming temperatures are causing the icy barriers that once protected Shishmaref to form later in the season. This leaves the village vulnerable to fierce waves that pummel and eat away at the coastline.

As a result, entire foundations of houses have been destroyed as the ground has receded into the sea. Already 18 houses have been relocated to higher ground and rising water could eventually engulf the entire island. The estimated cost to relocate the village is $100 million.

A map of Antarctica shows what appear to be black dots in the middle of the continent. These, Gore says, are pools of water. Initially scientists assumed that these pools would freeze and fill up with ice. Instead, they burrow like termites all the way through the ice "and make it like Swiss cheese," he says.

Larsen B, an enormous ice shelf in Antarctica, was thought to be safe for at least 100 years despite global warming. After all, it had already been there for tens of thousand of years. "But starting at the end of January 2002, in a period of 35 days, it completely broke up," Gore says. "They were shocked. The scientists still haven't gotten over that."

When land-based ice like the Larsen B ice shelf falls into the sea and melts, Gore says it raises sea levels much more rapidly than the slow melting of mountain glaciers.

If Greenland and Antarctica continue to melt, Gore says the maps of the world will need to be redrawn. Low-lying areas near southern Florida, Manhattan and the area surrounding the San Francisco Bay could end up under water, Gore warns.
http://www2.oprah.com/tows/slide/200612/20061205/slide_20061205_350_108.jhtml

In August 2005, millions of Americans were left homeless by Hurricane Katrina, one of the most powerful hurricanes in recent history. Gore says people should expect more Category 4 and 5 hurricanes if the ocean waters continue to warm.

"Ocean-based storms stronger because when the top layer of the water gets warmer, the wind speed in these hurricanes goes up and the moisture content goes up," Gore says.

You are not helpless in the fight against global warming. Gore goes inside a Lowe's Home Improvement store outside Nashville, Tennessee, to show you the five things you can buy that will help solve the climate crisis…and save you a few bucks!

Compact fluorescent light bulbs

Outdoor solar lighting

Programmable thermostats

Air filters

Electric hot water heater blanket

32. It's been done before
Robert Greenwald's "Outfoxed" was available for download, given out free or you could buy. I've got a downloaded copy, a copy that Robert Greenwald gave to me (at a conference) and I bought one for a friend. Neil Young has videos of his latest album online but he's still selling records.

It appears to be a new form of marketing. If you download it from google, you won't get the extras available on DVD. But, by making it available to download, a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't be able to buy a copy get to see it. It also allows people to check it out before they buy their own copy.

FWIW, we're going to buy a copy of the DVD too.

7. We've already dont most of his suggestions...
I've replaced nearly every lightbulb in the house (3 left) with flourescents. Here's a tip for those things: They NEVER last as long as they claim (5 years? 7 years?) I've taken to marking each one with the date with a sharpie pen when I install them, so that when they die, I can take them back for a refund/exchange. These bulbs use 1/4 of the electricity of an equivalent incandescent bulb. If everyone used them we could cut our lighting energy consumption by 75%!

We also already have a programmable thermostat. They really do save you money.

I need to look into the water heater blanket.

33. Marking the bulbs with a date is a good idea
I've found that they don't last either. I had tried saving the packaging to no avail and had all but given up on tracking them life but now, I think I'll try the marker idea.

Thanks!

What a super guy Al Gore is. What a blessing to us!

I do hope everyone sees/hears/reads this information he presents. He just dismissed the 'critic' who poo-pooed his theory (or rather, the whole concept of Global Warming) as being funded by the biggest polluters. It helps when you know the truth, and he knows it and tells it!

Thanks, Mr. Gore!

12. Al Gore was great on Oprah
And Oprah did a great job telling folks that Al's documentary was the 3rd largest grossing documentary in history and asking the leading questions so that Al could go straight to his premise. It was very good teamwork between Al and Oprah today.

This was an excellent show for the low-info to the very informed citizen.

It also looks like Al lost some weight. He looked a lot leaner than he did a few months ago. Maybe he's trimming down for the Oscars in February.

I'm not always into Oprah but she did a great job today and explained how she felt about seeing the movie and an ordinary person would. The polar bears got to me too, Oprah. Gore looks great and so did Tipper. I thought it was funny/cute the way thte former VP of the U.S. just goes strolling into Loews with a camera crew. Wonder how many stares he got!

30. Yeah that was great! And to recall how detractors said how "wooden"
and "remote" he was while running in '00. I mean, here's the man himself, showing, in real terms, what we can do to counter global warming. I also especially like how he blasted the critics as phony researchers in the pay of big polluters.

I love Al.

37. OT: you mark my words. If Al & Tipper both lose weight, then
that will mean that he's running in '08! But then again, maybe he's doing it for the Academy Awards, as you say. Everybody wants to look their best there, meaning nobody would want to be feeling bloated around all those actors and cameras.

19. My mom said he was great on the show
and explained everything well and sounded like a professor.

I just saw the film and it's very effective and goes by quite quickly and keeps the attention very well. For people thinking this may be a dull documentary, it really isn't. And some of the facts mentioned were pretty jaw dropping in itself.

And the tips are pretty simple. I'll have to do those things.

The country really needs a president with that sort of intelligence. I feel that yet at the same time, I can't blame him for not wanting to go through all the media bullshit. It's frustrating and tiring.

29. This revealed one thing to me...
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 10:13 AM by RestoreGore
When we should be at the point in this country of enacting the solutions we still have to spend time telling people what global warming is! At this rate that ten year window closes ever faster. Where do some of these people live? Under a rock? It was only YESTERDAY that a person in the audience stood up and said, "I get it now?" Global warming has been around for the last three decades or more and gaining momentum. I can only shake my head sometimes. I hope this reached a portion of the country that needs to see it, but at the pace people in this country seem to move I really hope something can come of it. And about those house parties, I don't think Mr. Gore is going to get any Republicans having any considering the organization tied to this. If this is not a partisan political issue, which it isn't, then moveon should not be part of it. I just hope this doesn't backfire on him. JMO.

I can mention others just to mention them, can't I? Or do only certain people here feel they have the right to comment on Al Gore here? Sorry if you thought I was "stealing your thunder." I merely mentioned them to show how many awards this movie and book have won in total. Actually, I hold them in more esteeem personally. Is that allowed as well?

And just to be thorough, they all also just received an award from the California League Of Conservation Voters:

http://www.ecovote.org/truth/

But that is an award that actually recognizes them environmentally, so no one really cares, right? It's only the Oscar people are chomping at the bit for, because once again all people can think about is 2008, not the fact that the film deserves the award based on its content regardless.

40. Producer's Guild of America Honors Inconvenient Truth
The Producers Guild of America will honor the eco-documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" with the 2007 Stanley Kramer Award, which recognizes "work that dramatically illustrates provocative social issues."

The honor will be presented to the film's producers during the group's 18th annual awards ceremony, set for January 20 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City. It is named after the late director of such edgy films as "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and "On the Beach."

Producers on the Al Gore-starring "Truth" include Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and Scott Z. Burns.

Last year, the Kramer award went to the boxing drama "Million Dollar Baby."
