Pelosi's New chairman of the House Intelligence Committee wants more troops in Iraq
n a surprise twist in the debate over Iraq, Rep. Silvestre Reyes, the soon-to-be chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said he wants to see an increase of 20,000 to 30,000 U.S. troops as part of a stepped up effort to “dismantle the militias.”

The soft-spoken Texas Democrat was an early opponent of the Iraq war and voted against the October 2002 resolution authorizing President Bush to invade that country. That dovish record got prominently cited last week when Speaker designate Nancy Pelosi chose Reyes as the new head of the intelligence panel.

But in an interview with NEWSWEEK on Tuesday, Reyes pointedly distanced himself from many of his Democratic colleagues who have called for fixed timetables for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Coming on the eve of tomorrow’s recommendations from the bipartisan Baker-Hamilton commission, Reyes’s comments were immediately cited by some Iraq war analysts as fresh evidence that the intense debate over U.S. policy may be more fluid than many have expected.

“We’re not going to have stability in Iraq until we eliminate those militias, those private armies,” Reyes said. “We have to consider the need for additional troops to be in Iraq, to take out the militias and stabilize Iraq … We certainly can’t leave Iraq and run the risk that it becomes Afghanistan” was before the 2001 invasion by the United States.

1. Bye Bye Social Security.

Why does Reyes believe that militia in Iraq can be eliminated? Hitler never "eliminated" Switzerland's militia.

This sounds like the 70-year war of, was it, Cheney's?

5. No, I don't think he was alluding to that.
He's saying it's not a winnable war.

7. Actually I haven't a clue what that meant.
"Hitler never took out switzerland's militia"? Huh? Germany never went to war with the bank of switzerland. A better example might have been "Hitler never took out Yugoslavia's militias", as at least doing so was something that the Germans tried and failed to do.

18. Words themselves are sometimes clues.
The other poster observed I was saying that Iraq can't be won militarily is essentially correct, any continuance there just wastes more lives.

Instead of the delving into the questions and answers regarding why Hitler didn't invade Switzerland, which cannot possibly be known, only opined upon; or of looking at Yugoslavia's history; look at the word's conception. If any group of people should understand the reality of militia, Americans should.

For further clues, explore the historical usage of the English word "militia".

Do you support "the mission" (which of course changed after the WMD lie fell through)?

11. "eliminate those militias, those private armies"
As opposed to our "santcioned" militias, our "sanctioned" armies no doubt.

I can't remember if you're against the war or not. I think, like most sane people, you are, but I'm fuzzy on the details.

15. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss
I wouldn't be so concerned about Reyes' views, if not for the fact that he will soon be CHAIRMAN OF THE SENATE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE.

I can't wait to hear his views on warrantless wiretapping. :sarcasm:

21. IDIOT
Fucking Moran! #@%&*!!! I'd say half the goddamn country is in a militia. Why? Because the government is a sham, wrapped in falsehood, hidden from us by a wall of dementia. People are in the militias because Rumsfeld failed to instill order. Exacerbated beyond redemption when stupid fucking L. Paul Bremer sent the army HOME WITH THEIR RIFLES and refused to give them jobs! There is NO MILITARY solution.

I thought a pre-requisite to heading the intelligence committee was you had to be INTELLIGENT. He needs to pull his head out of his ass and take a field trip to Anbar, or Mosul, or Fallujah and not the green zone. Then maybe he won't be mistaken for having SHIT FOR BRAINS.

done with rant.
