Lauer to Gore: "You could save the world." |
|
He actually said that! It was a lead in to his question asking if Gore was running in 08, but the way he said it surprised me. I was waiting for him to twist a knife in Gore.
My question: is the worm turning with the MSM? Have they started seeing the error in their ways. Have they reached a point where, horrified at last, they have started to "rehabilitate" their reputations?

but no, they've had no crisis of conscience. They read the same election results and polls as the rest of us. It's all about $$$.

6. Plus Lauer looked stunned by the Iraq Study Group's report |
|
Of course, we've been saying this all along.
I was gratified to hear him say that what the admin had characterized as "cut and run" is essentially what the study group is recommending. Hello?

I hope it would be a comeback like Andrew Jackson after having been robbed by another President's son, John Quincy Adams. When Jackson finally won the presidency he cleaned house with wholesale firings. It would be a sea change and Al Gore could very well go down as one of the most important presidents in history.
I believe he IS going to run. No politician would be able to pass this up.

9. When I first read the headline I thought it said LAURA to Gore: you could save the world |
|
I was thinking OMG, even she's had enough of her husband and his boneheaded dangerous policies.
Anyway, I think some of the MSM is finally starting to realize that the majority of the public is opposed to a lot of the actions undertaken by the Administration and its lapdog Congress. The midterm elections should have been a mega wakeup call to them. It will be interesting to see how they cover the work of the incoming Congress. Although if their coverage of the Murtha/Hoyer vote is any indication, they'll be up to their old tricks again.

10. People know that Gore is the best person for the job |
|
Don't forget that in spite of everything they threw at Gore back in 2000 ... he still won the popular vote and the Bush team could only "win" by means of election theft - backed-up by their buddies at Fox News and on the Supreme Court.
It means that a majority of the public has been pretty-much innoculated against media lies about Gore. They can now see that all the stuff about Gore being "too stiff" and how regular folks would rather have a beer with a draft-dodgin' alcoholic frat-boy - was so much horse manure.
I don't know Lauer, but sometimes an interviewer will say something that is likely to provoke an interesting or unpredictable response. They want scoops and they encourage guests to go further than what they previously put on the record. It doesn't necessarily mean that the interviewer personally believes everything he or she is saying.
On the other hand, if people who were previously hostile are now warming up to the idea of a Gore comeback ... I guess we should see that as a good thing - no?
I guess every TV show wants to be the place where Al Gore makes his announcement for 2008! :-)
My guess is that if and when it happens - it will be on the Dave Letterman show (remember back in 2003/4 they did a running joke ... "paging Al Gore")
In Gore We Trust :-)

20. Yeah, I was surprised too! |

It just seemed to me that Lauer was totally out of his usual character. All of a sudden he was giving Gore this total worship. I think Gore was taken aback, too. He was gracious and thanked Lauer for his remarks but was a bit stumbling in his response. I think he was probably blown away! As I said before, I think he was expecting the twist of the knife in his chest!

23. He thanked Lauer but then said he had no plans to run and |
|
that he felt what he was doing to alert people to the danger of global warming was more important to him right now. Lauer responded by arguing that as a presidential candidate he would have a far greater platform to make his case but Gore still demurred.
He didn't rule it out but he seemed cool on saying anything to encourage anybody. It was kinda funny, I thought.
Mostly, he impressed me so much with his wisdom and his temperate demeanor. I have gotten so used to W's strange outbursts and weird speech patterns that I have almost forgotten what it was like to have a leader who spoke in calm, intelligently put together sentences.
This makes me so sad I sometimes wish I could cry. But now I am hoping for better days with the Congress in Dem hands. I am encouraged by our new committee chairpersons in the House and Senate!

22. Turning worms? No. Grabbing ratings. |
|
I don't rant about this often (it's a lost cause, I know), and I'll keep it brief now. I'm inspired to comment because I've seen so many of these suggestions lately.
Let's be clear on this. The mainstream media is an entertainment business. That's it. If any part of the individual commentators, editorial staffs, producers, etc. are actually changing, the way in which they are changing is a reflection, and nothing more, of what they perceive to be a ratings producer, which in their game means more money. Their political consciousness isn't changing, if indeed they ever had one. What is changing is the way they present themselves so as to maintain, at least, or boost, at best, their own ratings.
This is not to say that certain commentators and the few real journalists in the entertainment business we call news these days don't have political a political conscience they express. Rather, the fact that more progressive voices have found a place from which they express themselves truthfully is a result of the desires of the viewing public to hear that kind of message. KO has an audience, which is why he remains on the air. If he didn't, he'd be gone. O'Reilly and his ilk also have an audience, which has shrunk in recent years. Those who at least give the appearance of riding the fence still do, but they lean one way or the other based on the prevailing winds. The results of November's election shifted the winds and caused some of the fence riders to lean in a slightly different direction.
For ratings.

24. Basically, I said the same thing that you did, Roy |
|
Or I meant to. Here's the deal: you are absolutely right about ratings. No argument there. That is why Lauer made his "big" pronouncement about "saving the world." They have to make some sharp turns. They have to rehabilitate their image. Otherwise, they look stupid and out of step (which they are and always have been as we well know).
No, the worm turns only to the k-ching brought on by ratings.
