Tell me why I should support your candidate for President (keep it positive) |
|
I have no clue who I am going to support in 2008 and to be honest, I'm not really caring at this time either. I, like many of us here, finished up some hard campaigning this past election season and taking a break for a bit til I get geared up again.
But I know that many of you already have ideas as to who will be supporting. So post here why I should support your candidate - and keep it positive. The surest way for me to NOT support your candidate is if your excuse is only to be lame about another candidate.

9. Primary season, at least for some, is special |
|
It is a time when you can pick a candidate based on what is important to you. Unfortunately, the primary season is being condensed more and more so that the early deciders in only a few states are the ones who get to pick the nominees. This is a bad thing and I wish the DNC would require states to space the primaries out and allow some breathing room between contests. That would be better for the candidates and for democracy.
As for pushing advocacy for a particular candidate, that seems an odd thing to do on DU and even odder to do it now, when the Congress has just turned over. My best advice is to watch the new Congress in January and February. See who honors the will of the people and who honors your own beliefs and rely on that. I can't rank what your political goals are and who best supports them, only you can do that. But I don know that in the flush of the new Democratic Congress, there are opportunities for reform, to provide desperately needed oversight for the Executive Branch and provide review for a lot of programs. These are rare opportunities and I would watch how this either is or isn't done, who acts and who prevents action and who cheers from the sidelines.
It is too early for all the other stuff. We have to act in Congress now to begin a Democratic agenda. That matters. That should inform the '08 stuff, all of which which change many times anyway before a single caucus selection is made in Iowa.

you will support the candidate with the BIG D after their name. Now as to who to support for nomination - I'm as clueless as you. I am mostly interested in someone who will 1) WIN! 2) Truely unite the country behind him/her. 3) Bring about a real resolution to the troubles in the Near/Middle East. 4) Give us universal health care. 6) Put the country on a sane economic track.

12. Only two senators have been elected President in 100 years |
|
Which makes me consider good non-senators a bit more.
And since Presidential candidates have won their homestate 90% of the time in the last few decades, I also consider good candidates from flippable red states a bit more.

13. Al Gore is the best person for the job |
|
The most qualified, experienced, intelligent and capable leader available.
Track record of achievement in the House, Senate and as Vice-President.
Great communicator (see him on Leno, SNL, Oprah, Daily Show ...)
Spoke out against invasion of Iraq and PATRIOT Act from the beginning.
Served in Vietnam (didn't seek to avoid the draft)
Tipper rocks! (no messy divorces or annullments in his history)
Already won the most votes back in 2000. Will win again in 2008.
In Gore We Trust :-)

14. I second your vote for Gore. Plus...although he was a Senator...he was VP |
|
and so has already had a hand in running our Government. And, worked under a popular Democratic President who included him.
He also now has "Business Experience" having been an "outsider" for six years.
That alone gives him excellent qualifications on top of all the other goodies you mentioned.

19. because he or she will have a "D" after their name |
|
at this point I'm far more concerned with winning the office than I am with exactly who sits in the chair.
That the 2008 campaign already seems to have started on DU is... disappointing. That so much of the infighting consists of negative campaigning against potential opponents is... even more disappointing.
The 2004 primary and election opened wounds on DU that may never heal, and 2008 is looking to be even worse.

Let the election evolve into a referendum on racism. As a Chicago Sun-Times columnist recently pointed out, every time a horrified West Virginian shook her fist and exclaimed that she would never stand for a Papist in the White House, two more West Virginians with a generally unfavorable view of Catholics voted for Kennedy just to prove they weren't bigots. Everyone said a Roman Catholic could never be elected president. We'd probably still be saying that if it hadn't already happened. And we will we continue saying the same about Blacks until one is elected.
So let's ride Obama's current celebrity for all it is worth and see what happens.

22. If I remember correctly, you like cowbell, |
|
as in Will Ferrell's skit on Saturday Night Live. The reason I know this information is because Al Gore empowered you to share it with the rest of us when he championed the internet. This is just one small reason as to why I support Al Gore for President wholeheartedly without reservations. Of course Al being on the forefront of saving life as we know it, is another. To sum it up, the man has vision in spades, not to mention real integrity, wisdom and compassion.

Evan Bayh - fiscally responsible, with extensive experience as Governor and Secretary of State of a very red state (Indiana)
Wesley Clark - strong national security credentials, and enthusiastic grassroots support coast-to-coast
Bill Richardson - a good mix of foreign policy and domestic issue expertise, along with gubernatorial experience
Tom Vilsack - decent experience with managing health issues at the state level (as Governor), and presiding over a Republican-dominated rural "purple" state (Iowa)
