Parties Amassed Debt in Election Effort

WASHINGTON -- Both political parties assumed millions of dollars in debts
in the waning days of the congressional campaign as the election intensified
and the prospects of a power shift became more apparent.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is trying to pay off a $10
million debt and the National Republican Senatorial Campaign is more than
$1 million in the red. Other party committees also were expected to report
various levels of debt in documents to be filed Thursday with the Federal
Election Commission.

Both sides have mounted campaigns to recoup their money. DCCC Chairman
Rahm Emanuel and House Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi met with members of the
Democratic caucus this week and urged them to donate to retire the debt.

Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, the outgoing head of the NRSC, appealed
for money in a fundraising letter to GOP donors last month. The NRSC teamed up
with the Republican National Committee in a futile attempt to hold onto the GOP's
Senate majority.
