Elections Aren’t Over Yet. Check Out Texas District 23

by Mike Hall, Dec 6, 2006

Texas voters in one of the biggest congressional districts in the country go to the polls Tuesday in a runoff election that pits a former Democratic representative with a 98 percent pro-working families voting record against a Bush administration rubber-stamp who has supported working families a pathetic 8 percent of the time.

Union-backed Ciro Rodriguez finished second to incumbent Rep. Henry Bonilla (R) in the eight-candidate field on Election Day in the Texas 23rd Congressional District. The district stretches across dozens of counties in the state’s southwestern boot heel—from San Antonio to El Paso. Bonilla failed to win a majority of the vote, so a runoff must be held.

Rodriguez, earned his 98 percent AFL-CIO voting record during four terms in Congress before disgraced former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay’s Texas cronies redistricted Rodriguez out of a job. He lost a primary election in 2004 in the new district when a disputed recount gave his opponent a 58-vote victory.

Says Texas AFL-CIO Communications Director Ed Sills:

It’s hard to have greater contrast on labor issues than that between Ciro Rodriguez…and Henry Bonilla, a lifetime 8 percent voter.

Here’s a gem from Bonilla’s own website’s “issues” section: “Henry has also fought to rein in out-of-control agencies like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Through his leadership, these agencies’ power grab on America’s small businesses has been stalled.”

Good to know that workplace safety and workers rights have been reined in. After all, there were just too many folks going home from work in one piece, and that darned old NLRB’s been nothing but a union-loving bunch of workers’ rights crazies. Jeez! (Click here for more on the real NLRB.)
