Empowered Democratic governors look to '08

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic governors who will take over the majority of state capitols plan to use their newfound power to make changes and help put their party back in the White House.

"There's a shift in power and that means that the American people are seeing governors as the instrument of change," said New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, the outgoing chairman of the Democratic Governors Association.

His staff circulated a memo noting that states with Democratic governors went from 207 electoral votes to 295 while Richardson led the group. The magic number to win the presidency is 270.

The Democratic governors' national prospects have spiked from 2004, when no sitting Democratic governors was in the hunt for the White House. Besides Richardson and Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack -- the first of what promises to be many declared Democratic candidates -- several others might be considered for the vice presidency because of their proven appeal in GOP-leaning states.

1. Believe it or not, I have never thought about it in those terms. I thought that we now have a majo
majority of governors - 36 I believe. But I had never translated that into electoral votes.

That means if every Governor could deliver their state for a Democratic candidate, we can easily win.

But the operative word is "if." My governor is Democratic, but our state was red :( Sounds like some Democratic governors need to work harder. Of course, Dean's 50 state plan will help tremendously.

Thanks for the post. It is really heartening.

2. Richardson and DGA got little credit for the wins....
I remember Richardson and Dean had a press conference right after the election...I never did see it on C-Span. I searched for it. I did not see much about it at all.

Was it 6 additional governorships we won? And 10 statehouses? Not much credit.

3. That's good news
I think it's very possible for us to win Ohio this time, plus New Mexico, Iowa and maybe Arkansas.

4. You're saying that, technically, if we lose CA (TX being a wash),
Dems could still take it in 08, with this "analysis"?
