I Finally Saw Al Gore's 2008 Campaign Commercial
It took a while, but they finally had An Inconvenient Truth at the video store. Mighty impressive, especially the rockstar reception he gets at public appearances.

1. I agree. I don't fault him a bit ....
he's worked the global warming issue more than anyone. But it's about 1/3 feel good political add. Like the ones they run at the conventions 'The man from Plains' for Carter is a good example.

2. i'm not slagging him at all...i think it's a great move on his part.
i'm just saying that the parts that weren't the global warming slide show were 100% political advertising.

i thought it was a great movie. and he gets bonus points for using it for his advantage.

3. I believe he made it sincerely based on the issue and not for any political jockeying
and believe that conclusion denigrates the sincerity of his effort.

5. i completely agree with you that the slideshow is sincere
and it's incredibly powerful. you can tell that the man has dedicated himself to making a thorough, conscientious, in-depth study of an issue that he intensely believes in. which is all the more commendable.

it's the non-slideshow parts of An Inconvenient Truth that i saw as pure political ad. Again, i'm not in any way faulting him for that. i think it's a great move.

i don't think it's denigrating to say so, either.

10. For Al Gore political jockeying promotes the issue.
That is to say, if Al Gore's in the White House, we'll see positive action on the climate change issue. So even if it was designed as a campaign ad, it's motivated by a sincere desire to make things better.

4. Campaign commercial? I saw parts of it saying "there are
powerful interests working against these inconvenient truths", and we know who those interests are, but I wouldn't call that overtly political. Merely rational.

6. If Memory Serves...
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 02:43 PM by samfishX
...Gore didn't even WANT to include the non-global warming parts (the "political" parts) in the film and had to be talked into it by the director so the movie would be more humanized or something.
Gore originally wanted it to JUST be about his slide show and global warming, but ultimately relented.

11. true -- the producers discuss this in the DVD commentary
They even joke that when they went to interview Al in Carthage, he fed them dinner and then told them so many entertaining stories that they began to suspect that he was trying to stall them so they wouldn't have time to film him before it got too dark!

12. and those "political parts"
Edited on Fri Dec-08-06 08:48 PM by AtomicKitten
were heart-wrenching.

I am so grateful for F-9/11 in which Michael Moore shows the angry protest along Junior's inaugural route. I hadn't even read about it. It was a salve of sorts emotionally albeit small in light of the crushing circumstances.

9. Have you seen Neil Young's "After the Garden" video?
From New Neil Young Video "After The Garden" Visits "An Inconvenient Truth":

Neil Young's controversial album "Living With War" has become a hot-button item since its release in early May. Critically acclaimed as a milestone in confronting the most pressing issues of our times, Young has now made a unique video for the album's first song, "After The Garden."

It only made sense that Young would look to Al Gore's arresting documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" to help tell the song's story. "Al Gore's courageous film will be a lasting document," Young says, "a proof as years go by that Mr. Gore was right from the start, and willing to go on record. From his direct opposition to the war in Iraq to recognizing and confronting global warming, Mr. Gore has shown himself to be a visionary, standing out among his contemporaries."

If you haven't seen the video, go to http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/ and scroll down to "After the Garden." ATG looks like a precursor to a campaign video.
