Evan Bayh...Is My President! Saw him on C-Span and he's singing Kumbahyah!
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 07:09 PM by KoKo01
Just what we need. Did anyone else see him on "Road to the Presidency" on C-Span just now?

He's putting out the "feelers and testing the water" and saying "Conciliation and Working Together is what we Dems are about."

He's not MY GUY...but he might be Yours? Did you see it...and do you think he could be YOUR choice? Did his message ring with you?

BTW: He referred to "My Father" many times in his "presentation." My Father...My Father...... where have we heard that before...

sleep at all. :P No, but really. He's coming across as warm, knowledgeable and smart.

8. Bayh is not my guy
Edited on Sun Dec-10-06 07:20 PM by pstans
Back in the spring he said that Democrats need to be more hawkish on the war and then just recently he said that Democrats could lose their newfound grip on Congress if the party pursues an ideological course. Which lead Kos to post this...

"Ideological"? You mean, like governing based on core Democratic principles?

I know Bayh doesn't have any of those. But perhaps he could wait until Democrats propose something "extreme" before he says idiotic shit like this?

Bayh refused to send some of his big warchest to the DSCC when we pushed the "Use it or lose it" strategy, denying the national party money when locked in its fierce battle for control of the Senate. Now, after betraying the party pre-election, he wants to lecture it post-election?

I will consider voting for Bayh when he considers becoming a Democrat.

9. Just watched him
& I think he seems like a really nice person.

And that's what I think everytime I see him: he seems like a really nice person.

I remember his mother Marvella...she had a zest for life & it came through; she was very popular in DC.

But her son doesn't seem to have the passion.

With some of these politicians, I don't know why they're running. They want to be President, but I don't know why.

Anyway, he seems like a good man, & the country could do a lot worse.

11. I wish he was like his father, Birch Bayh
He was a progressive. Sadly, he got defeated by Dan Quayle of all people in 1980 as part of Reagan's landslide (remember, Indiana is a pretty conservative state...hasn't voted Democrat in a Presidential election since 1964.)

13. Zell Miller supports his presidential run.
If that isn't the kiss of death for the masses - Zell's endorsement is the kiss of death for Bayh's candidacy for me.

Other than that, he's an empty head in an empty suit.

Can you please provide a link.. Or are you just pulling our legs?

Unfortunately, there is no link to Miller's endorsement of Bayh. He said this in a radio interview after the release of his book "A National Party No More" - condemning the Democratic party's direction and John Kerry's candidacy. The NPR interviewer asked him if there were any Democrats that he could endorse. Bayh was at the top of the list.

14. Bayh is my senator
I have emailed him several times about some of his votes. He went right along with the Repbs. One time I told him to run a as a Repb and let the people have a real Dem. When he voted for the war I told him he should have talked to his dad and Ted Kennedy.

I never received any type of response from him, but Lugar our Repb Sen. always responds. Of course he never changes his stance but at least he acknowledges his people.

I did like him as Gov.

20. What still bothers me about Bayh is an encounter I watched on CSPAN
in which an old woman at some town hall meeting came up to him after he'd finished speaking. She asked him about the theft of the 2004 election and what was being done to ensure the integrity of our votes. He responded that he didn't think there'd been any such thing, and that everything was on the up-n-up. He completely dismissed her concerns. Just flat-out.

So I decided to dismiss him.

21. Bayh brings EVRY RED state into play...no other Dem can say that...
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 12:47 AM by fuzzyball
He will force the RNC to spend cash in every solid red state,
which makes them weaker in purple states.

The question is...will those on extreme left will be smart enough
to recognize that and go for a winner, or will they insist on
Kucinich or some other very liberal senator ala Wellstone?

25. There's a reason he brings red states into play
And it's not a good one.

Look, winning the White House is more than just being able to say "Yay! The Dem won!!". It's about the direction the next president will lead the country. I see absolutely nothing in Bayh that I agree with. Frankly I am uncertain WHAT issues matter most to him, but I do know that they aren't mine.

He reminds me a lot of Bob Dole. Nice guy, not ferociously right wing, but too far right for me.

Getting elected in a state where your father was a political legend doesn't translate into bringing every red state in play.

voters are and they are solidly in the middle of the
bell curve. The country is tired of republican stupidity
in many ways including Iraq and that won't change with the
headstrong person residing in WH by 2008.

Someone like Bayh will be very amenable to independents and
even moderate repubs.

I don't care if his father was a popular politician, it is
still not easy for a democrat to get elected statewide in
Indiana which has voted repub in every presidential election
for half a century. If Bayh can do it again and again in
Indiana, he can do it in Iowa, MO, OH, CO, etc.

So what would you rather have...Bayh or Rudy or McCain or Mitt?
I will take Bayh although I am rooting for Hillary is she makes it.

33. No - he doesn't really.
Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 12:44 PM by Clark2008
Red staters don't really like milquetoast - which is why it's so hard for New England Democrats to break into the voting bases in the South and mid-West - and, even though he's not from New England, Bayh comes across like milquetoast. True or not, New England Dems are regarded as milquetoastish (or "wusses" in the vernacular) in the red/purple states. I doubt Edwards would be popular in the red states for similiar reasons, despite his, too, being from a red state (in fact, it was questionable whether he'd win re-election to the Senate had be opted to run again).

Bayh won in Indiana because of his father's name recognition, not because of his persona.

28. I like Bayh
He's competent, was a very good governor and he's done a decent job as senator in a tough climate - remember that Indiana twice gave Bush over 60% of the vote.

I'd vote for him if he's nominated. But I don't really want him. He's a little too center-right on some issues for my taste. And he seems so dispassionate; he basically offers "competent management". And while that would be eons better than what we're getting right now, it's not really much to build the party or get people very excited.

Edited on Mon Dec-11-06 01:19 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
I'm not so sure about him.
If it were a period of prosperity and peace, maybe we could afford to have a pleasant non-entity in the White House.
But what we need now is someone who has the courage of his convictions and the abiloity to persuade people to follow him.
Or we can get someone who doesn't offend anyone and continue to watch our country circle the drain.
