Apocalypto (Birth of a nation part 2)

Talk to a movie critic and they will tell you that D.W Griffith 1915 silent movie epic, "Birth of a nation" was a cinematic masterpiece. Technically that may be true. Cinema was in its infancy. However, there was one problem with it, Birth of a nation was a racist piece of shit. It portrayed black men as savage rapists of white women. The K.K.K is made out to be saviors of the USA. It was quite blatant message. Now here in the twenty-first century, racists have to be more tactful and oblique. They have to be more passive-aggressive. Mel Gibson has destroyed the myth of Liberal Hollywood.
Anybody with a half of brain knew that Mel Gibson's, "Passion of the Christ" was anti-Semitic. The Klan every Christmas would have these passion plays about the death of Jesus. Guess who gets the blame? Yes, the Jews! All these right wing pundits denied the movie was anti-Jewish! We all knew better!
Mel Gibson is a Catholic and like white Protestants, they are sexually repressed males. Their outlet for repressed concupiscence is violence. That is why Gibson went overboard depicting a tormented Jesus! Gibson made those scenes with flaming hard on. Well, maybe. Gibson loves graphic violence. Which goes to show that he is one sick puppy. Rob Zombie is sick too, but he is just a punk ass nihilists. Mel uses violence for propaganda and sadistic fun.
If you get past the gratuitous gore of Mel Gibson's latest cinematic installment, "Apocalypto" you have to question the motives of making this period piece. Why make a movie about the ancient tribe, "The Mayans"? The LA Raza movement of the 1960's lauded the Mayans for contributing to the advancement of humanity. They invented the calendar and pioneered mathematics and other scientific stuff. But what does Mel focus on? The bloody sacrifices and body mutilations, of he has a fictional father who is fighting for traditional family values. This protagonist tries to save his family from the savage tribe.
The message here is that white Christianity civilized the world and people of color are just animals that need to be tamed.
If you want to learn about the Mayans, you wont find it in this movie. Go to the fucking library!

2. Rob Zombie's just a horror freak...
There's certainly plenty of those around. Horror movies have a large following, though I'll never understand the fascination. I'm too much of an old-school gamer for most of the movies to get past my whole "why the hell is s/he doing THAT?" Believe me, any serious gamer who's spent any time out of his mother's basement would make short work of Jason OR Michael Myers. :)

Mel Gibson does seem to like the ultra-violent shit. From the Mad Max epic (not really my thing either...never been a big fan of dystopian scenarios) to Braveheart (brutal battle scenes--but did drive home how nasty warfare really was back then) to We Were Soldiers (one of the only war movies I actually liked) to The Passion (never seen it, never wanted to).

Will I see THIS movie? Doubtful. I'm not even sure I'll watch it when it hits cable. I'm just not that interested.

I liked his Lethal Weapon movies. They were funny. But my favorite scene in all of them was watching Rene Russo kick ass in #3.

3. Unfortunately, most of the recent archaeology supports Mel's
view of the Mayan world... brilliant, but bloodily dysfunctional...

As for the family values pap, that's another story.

4. the best part is that he calls the film
"Mel Gibson's Apocalypto" which, considering his latest brouhaha, wasn't particularly bright but does speak to an abundance of arrogance.

That said, Rolling Stone gave is a great review. http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/movie/9387680/review/12626008/apocalypto?source=movie_reviews_rssfeed
