Freepers celebrate Johnson's condition
While there are some freepers out there who are handling Johnson's medical problems in a respectful way, there are a very large number who are not. Here is a collection of some quotes.

While I don't wish ill on the guy, could this be devine intervention?????

Clearly, Johnson needs to resign from office immediately and spend time at home where he can recuperate in peace and quiet with his loved ones. I wish him a full and quick recovery in his retirement.

Why don't you ask him?
You seem to have a more direct link. Why didn't God just strike him with lightening so we can retake the Senate?

I'll second your sentiments. I hope he has a long and fruitful career in the private sector.

4. They mangle values worse than they mangle the English language.
It is disgusting across the board.

They haven't the capacity to understand what is at stake if their 'heroes' continue to hold the Senate.

How can they be so fucking stupid?
I really mean that. It is unfathomable to me that so many utterly stupid people can think they know better without knowing anything.

It's dumbfounding.

Hey, that's a nice sentiment, and I applaud you for it. That said, you're ignorant and you need to stay away from political conversations.

They're blessing the Republican GOVERNOR during his tough time in deciding what to do.

That's how I read it.

If they were blessing Tim Johnson, they would have asked for prayers for the U.S. Senator.

11. .
Yeah, some of them are creeps and disgusting. The majority handled it respectfully.

One comment though as putting these posts up there without the context isn't fair and two of the replies you quoted weren't meant the way some might interpret it:

"To: rottndog
Why didn't God just kill him on the spot?

22 posted on 12/13/2006 9:32:54 PM PST by Texasforever (I have neither been there nor done that.)

This guy (Texasforever ) didn't say it to imply that he wished something like this. If you follow the thread, one can clearly see that it was in opposition to rottndog who asked whether it was divine intervention. Texasforever was among those who called such reasoning stupid.

The same applies to this reply, too, again from Texasforever:

"To: rottndog

Did you see what they wrote on their last night? They had at least 4.. maybe 5 threads rolling around.

One of them prayed that Senator Johnson died during his surgery.

I didn't go over there today and I don't plan to. But I will also never stand up for the lying, disgusting, UN-AMERICAN jerks.

Bullcrap? Nothing what I said in my post was bullcrap.
I checked out the thread to verify what the OP said, just out of interest and not because I didn't believe the OP. 2 of the quoted replies couldn't be seen as a "Freeper celebrating Johnsons' condition". These 2 replies confronted a person behaving like an idiot but they were pictured in a wrong way and apparently no one here noticed that. I pointed that out and that's bullcrap?
We'd be all over a journalist who did the same mistake if the sides were reversed and members of DU were portrayed unfairly. And it is my opinion that it's unfair to say that a majority of them celebrates and it was unfair to quote the one FR poster I mentioned in this context. This isn't about standing up for Freepers, it's about accepting the truth.

I never doubted that a part of the posters there are ugly. That is sadly the nature of a polarized American political culture. It's deplorable and it can be found on both sides. But it doesn't help if we only vilify the other side. We do it to them and they expect the worst from us. That's not healthy.
We call them unamerican, they believe we are unamerican. We believe that the Repubs are a danger for the world and America, they have exactly the same beliefs concerning the Dems.

So what? Should we engage in irrational discussions about them, thinking that all of them are evil because they post there or because they are Republicans? They might think the worst of me as a DUer but still I can point out that a large part of them usually behave well in situations like these.

28. Some of them may wish an American Senator to get well
But they all support wholesale slaughter in Iraq. As long as the people dying are only Muslims, it's OK with them. One less terrorist.

They "vilify the other side" with regularity. Their opinions are not entitled to respect just because they say so, and often include undoing parts of the Constitution. Some of them were supporting Nut Gringich in the idea of limits on freedom of speech.

Where do you draw the line at what is evil? Does the KKK deserve respect, for example?

By all means, treat the freepers respectfully - give them more space in which to claim the legitimacy of their opinions. Then watch as more and more of those brown people die.

Don't undrestimate the hand of God in this. Yes, I hope he recovers, but do you really think this happened by chance? Just as the abortionists and homofriendly were about to take over this country, one is struch down?

Everything happens for a reason.

15. ABC Nightly News characterized the reactions thusly:
The segment was by Jake Tapper, I believe:

Republicans - with heartfelt sympathies for Johnson and his family. They showed a clip of John Thune, who a few years ago lost to Johnson, over in enemy territory in Iraq, wishing Johnson and his family the best.

Democrats, meanwhile - with a Senate red-blue seating diagram as the visual, are worried about maintaining their Senate majority.

So there it is, the deep, heartfelt red-state values wishing the best, even for their ideological and personal opponents, while craven Democrats care only about power, even with the life of one of their own in the balance.

Or something like that.

One even pointed out that Sen. Johnson was the only member of the Senate with a kid in the military.

I don't think these guys speak for most of the freepers, any more than some of the more obnoxious things posted here represent DUers at large.

27. To play devil's advocate,
Let's go through this with inoffensive readings.

1. "While I don't wish ill on him, is it possible that God hospitalized him to give us the Senate?"

2 (to #1). "Were that the case, why wouldn't God have killed him outright? I think if God were to try to intervene to give us the Senate, he wouldn't do it like this."

3. "The man clearly needs to rest and recover, and I think it might be best if he were to leave the Senate to do so, though I'm certainly aware that this would be in our political interest."

4 (to #1). "You are being silly. You're claiming to have some knowledge of how God works? If you think you know that God's targeting assassinations, then why didn't God outright kill him?"

5 (to #3). "I agree that his leaving the Senate might be best for him, and I wish him well in his private life."

-------

While politically-minded and (in the case of the first one) ignorant, not sickening.
