Bush administration hates gay people, brown people, old people, sick people, and now blind people

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Tuesday asked an appeals court to overturn a ruling that could require a redesign of the nation's currency to help the blind.

Justice Department lawyers filed the appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on behalf of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

The appeal seeks to overturn a ruling last month by U.S. District Judge James Robertson, who ordered Treasury to come up with ways for the blind to recognize the different denominations of paper currency.

(And really, Associated Press, can you not read your own stylebook where it says not to use marginalizing terms like "the blind"?)

2. National Federation of the Blind doesn't want the currency change
I saw the President of this group on CNN last night and he is opposed to changing the currency. He says it makes blind people seem incapable.

I think his name was Mark Meyer?

8. It's Marc Maurer.
His argument is that if you're going to change the currency, change it for everyone, don't single out blind people -- they already have enough trouble with people assuming that being blind means being incapable, and doing this kind of thing is one more way to enforce the stereotype.

He also argued that by folding different denominations in different ways, it's possible to tell current currency apart.

Don't have an opinion one way or the other, just reporting what he said.

9. Incapable?
"...it makes blind people seem incapable."

What kind of argument is that?
Should guide dogs also be eliminated because they make people seem incapable of guiding themselves? Should wheelchairs be eliminated because they make people seem incapable of walking? Should friggin' insulin injections be eliminated because they make people seem incapable of secreting their own?

Putting Braille or some other tactile clues on bills would help them be more capable and therefore seem more capable (rather than incapable).

3. My mother is legally blind
and money really presents a problem for her as she can't read the numbers. Since the bills have only subtle differences, even low vision people have difficulty with it. I was hoping this one would pass.

6. How does she deal?
I've always wondered about this. Does she have to ask people to help all the time?

Can she use debit cards and credit cards?

4. It's probably much less time consuming listing the groups
the administration does not hate and/or care about.

Yah know what I mean?

7. I remember when Pete Wilson was gov of Cal and
he said that poor people don't like their children because they wouldn't have so many otherwise.

And Veterans, he hates them also. And poor homeless veterans...just die.
