"I am becoming disturbed that so many are behind Candidates they've Chosen!"

What did you expect - that they would stand behind candidates they have NOT chosen?

There is no more condescending attitutde than to call the choices of OTHER PEOPLE "rock stars" and that OTHER PEOPLE'S opinions are driven by "mind control."

11. You might want to wait and see who's running.
Edited on Fri Dec-15-06 08:08 PM by longship
And who isn't.

Then, weigh *all* the candidates one against each other. Look at their histories, their positions, their voting records, the depth of their experience, etc.

Then, come to a conclusion of which candidate might be the best to serve as the leader of the country. Then, support that candidate and vote for him or her.

However, in order to accomplish all this, one has to have the patience to wait more than another whole year, possibly longer.

Or, you may just want to mindlessly jump on a bandwagon now, fully understanding that all it is is a bandwagon.

Your choice.

Mine is to avoid the media bandwagon and make an *informed* choice from *all* the possibilities.

Sure, I have my favorites. But the turn of 2007 is far, far too soon to speak about candidates for the 2008 Presidential campaign. What about this do people not understand?

Ignore the media bullshit, because that's all it is.

5. I don't think that it's that bad.
Given the range of sources on DU and the rigor of the debate here, the average DUer is probably LESS susceptible than most Americans to media hype. The reason that there are so many partisans of one candidate or another is that (ding-ding) we have so MANY attractive possible candidates!
Look at it---Edwards, Clinton, Clark, Kucinich, Obama, Gore, even Vilsack have some very good points. I can't find fault with anyone who has given over their heart to one of the above, for there is a lot of justification in any case.

I mean, you're basically saying that unless you approve of the candidate, it's a wrong decision to make. Interesting.

21. here's what disturbs me even more ...
Warner ... gone ...
Bayh ... gone ... (let bygones be bygones? ... sorry ...)
some have "looked at it" and decided not to jump in ...

what the hell is going on here?

too much is being decided out of the public view and without the participation of the voters ... possible candidates cruise around the country talking to party insiders and prospective "big boy" funders ... they parade their goodies and see whether there's any hope ...

2 years before the next election, voters nowhere to be seen, and people are already dropping out ...

if that isn't a system in desperate need of reform, i don't know one that is ... Democrats need to find a way to "walk the walk" on taking the big money out of at least our primary process ... i hate the idea that a few insiders can make or break potential candidates ...

what the hell kind of democracy is that ?????

welshTerrier2 wrote: "2 years before the next election, voters nowhere to be seen, and people are already dropping out ..."

Gee, that's SO unlike any other presidential election, where, as we all know, the candidates always announce 2 years before the election, no one has ever dropped out for lack of support/money/interest/enthusiasm, so that EVERYONE thinks the 2008 election is unusual.
:sarcasm:

24. here's what i expect
i expect the American people, hopefully someday soon, to awaken from their slumber and realize that their democracy and their liberty will soon be gone if they don't remain vigilant ... democracies are not "self-sustaining" ... the poisoning by money, media and marketeers of "the Great American experiment" is everywhere ... no, 2008 will not be any different than the past except to say that it will be even worse ...

what i expect is for progressives and those in the political classes who respect for our founding values to start getting serious about the reforms we so desperately require ...

26. you've misquoted me ...
i did not write: "I am becoming disturbed that so many are behind Candiates they've Chosen!"

that statement was written by the OP ... not by me ...

but, since the issue has been raised, i do think it's unfortunate that so many focus so heavily on candidate support at the expense of a real discussion of the issues ... and i think it's tragic that so many line up behind a candidate instead of using their citizenship and their influence and their votes and their values to LEAD our candidates toward better positions ...

i think we're doing it backwards ... we should not pick candidates like we pick meals from a menu ... we should tell the chef what dish we want and how we want it prepared ... should there be room for compromise? of course ... but the people should lead ...

there's entirely too much "following" going on here ... it's a very rare day indeed when we see strong positions taken by a candidate supporter opposing their candidate on an issue ... it happens but it happens far too rarely ...

27. I'm "behind" a couple.
My primary choice is a no-brainer; I don't really give a shit if I'm the only person on the planet to cast a vote for Kucinich, I'll cast that vote because it's the right thing to do, and because his platform is light-years ahead of the rest.

In the general, I'd vote for Gore without hesitation even though I have some differences with him; specifically on NAFTA/CAFTA. There are other Democrats who could earn my vote in the general election as well, but they aren't, or are not yet, considering a run.

I'll be behind any candidate I feel might be worthy of the presidency in the primaries, regardless of whether or not I campaign or vote for them. I'd love to see a primary where it would be HARD to choose; where it took me until election day to make up my mind!

Frankly, the "rock stars of the moment," the "media sensations" are some that won't earn my vote in the primary or the general. I won't be herded into a vote.
