The Disappearance of George P. Bush
THE DISAPPEARANCE OF GEORGE P. BUSH

by Linda Milazzo

It was the year 2000. The new millennium. It featured a rising new star from a prominent American family. His name was George. George P. Remember George P.? The incessantly publicized and promoted son of Florida's Governor Bush? The most dominant face of George W. Bush's 2000 Presidential campaign?

(snip)

The media couldn't get enough of George P. He was the "fourth-coming." The likely successor to the mantle of the multi-generational dynasty whose fortune had amassed in unorthodox ways. Of course the unorthodox ways were of no interest to the press, whose sole focus was on the contentious election for the first President of the new millennium. The 2000 Presidential election was the nation's most divisive in history. It tore at the fabric of its democracy, tarnished the Supreme Court, and damaged the electoral system for decades, if not centuries to come.

Still it made a hit out of George P. Bush. For a couple years he was on his way to becoming the family's biggest star. But when Uncle W. took the nation to war, except for a carefully toned down appearance in the election of 2004, and some attention when he got married, George P. was neatly hidden from sight. He had to be. If he remained visible the questions would arise. Why isn't George P. serving in Iraq? George P.'s young enough. If he's a patriot, why doesn't he volunteer for the war?
Legitimate questions. So legitimate that the entire brood of military-age Bush grandchildren and cousins are no where to be found. They are hidden. Kept under wraps lest the question of their patriotism be decried. Except of course, First Twins Jenna and Barbara, whose sometime errant behavior throws them back in the public eye.

Certainly the military absences of Bushes, Cheneys, Rumsfelds, Wolfowitzes, Perles, Coulters, Limbaughs, O'Reillys, Hannitys, Crystals, Feiths, Ashcrofts, etc., are no news to those who pay attention. But it was particularly telling today as I watched Donald Rumsfeld's long goodbye. As I listened to his words and to the words of those who paid tribute at his farewell 'celebration' as Secretary of Defense.
...A further observation at today's ceremony was the absence, or so it appeared, of Mr. Rumsfeld's own military-age grandchild.

Later in the linked article, the author notes that Rumsfeld, in 2002, told a group of kids that he "hoped" HIS grandkids would join up for the military. Heh.

1. At one time in our nation's history,
the children of politicians were expected to enlist in time of war--or be branded cowards. Personally, I think the name is a good one to put on the whole Bush clan of fighting age--they wanted war, they should go fight it.

2. Also, at one time in our nation's history,
the children of wealth were expected to show some kind of social responsibility or consciousness; y'know, show some concern for the less fortunate.

Today, it's f-you peasants! Daddy's money can buy and sell ALL OF YOU!

So, if they're not flashing their pantyless bottoms at bars, they're sending American soldiers into unnecessary wars to one-up the elders.

4. Quentin, Theodore Roosevelt's youngest son, was shot down in France

during WWI. His death broke his father's heart, but Teddy never regretted his son's enlisting.

All of FDR's sons enlisted and were assigned war theatre without special treatment.

5. That's right
and another of his sons, Teddy Junior, died after landing on the beaches of Normandy-and winning, I believe, a Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery.

10. And three of Joe Kennedy's sons enlisted (Teddy was way too young) in WWII
Jack Kennedy even had his father pull strings for him so that he could get IN, not out of serving since his horrendous health actually disqualified him.

What a difference a couple of generations makes . . .

6. that time must have been a long time ago
because this country's wealthy have been paying their way out of war at least since (and during) the civil war.

16. I think the difference then was
that if you paid for a substitute, you were looked down upon as cowardly. I believe Lincoln paid for a substitute for his son Robert ca 1863, and was roundly criticized for it.

3. The British royals always go into the military. It is embarrassing
to think that no Bushes are on the line when the future king of England is going to go to Iraq (if he can without endangering the other soldiers.)

too bad webb didn't do this . . .

"One final note:. Recently, Virginia Senator-elect Jim Webb, a man I deeply respect, had a short conversation with George W. Bush. I would like to offer MY VERSION of how that conversation might have gone:

G.W. Bush: How's your boy?

Sen Webb: He's in harms way, Mr. Bush. How are your girls?

G.W. Bush: (Silence)"

11. Universal military service for 18 months for ALL
would be the perfect solution! Israel does it, and I am
sure other nations do it. Even the handicapped should be
required to serve. If they can work at a job, they can be
found some job in the military they can do. That would
bring out all the Bushes and Cheneys and Rumsfelds.

12. In the Bush family, they him "P."
Like they call * "W."

Probably not the best moniker to be stuck with in political life ...

15. Sorry to kill the wry humor here but I just have to admit...
I really don't remember P. True, I was 21 in 2000 and my knowledge of the Bush family went about as far as the Kennedy assassination, but I seriously...I watched a LOT of political t.v. that year and--I don't remember P. at all. Yikes.

17. Oh, I do
And yes, he and his "deer in the headlights" empty gaze were on TV way too much for my taste.

But then he had some sort of nasty stalking episode with his girlfriend, and he vanished just as quickly as he appeared. Haven't seen him since.
