Meanwhile .... at Sandhurst ....... |
|
As the scions of our patriotic Republic elite hide away and cross the street when nearing a military recruiting office hungry for young people to meet the calls to war from their parents, the son of true Royalty, like virtually every male child in the larger royal family of England graduated from Sandhurst and commissioned a second 'leftenent' in Her Majesty's Army.
And if you'll recall, these sons of the House of Windsor don't get just the cushy jobs. They've served in war, from the Falklands to the near term possibility of shipping to Afghanistan for young William.
Say what you will about the British Royals, at least they serve.
American Royalty ....... ?
Not so much.

2. Well, as someone whose grandfather graduated from Sandhurst... |
|
and whose great uncle graduated from Dartmouth...
I heartfully agree.
What have the Reagan kids, Clinton kid, Bush I kids, Bush II kids, done?

There was a time when American royalty had a sense of noblesse oblige. Two of Theodore Roosevelt's sons died in combat. Quentin's plane was shot down in WWI, and Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. won the Medal of Honor, posthumously, at Normandy. Everybody knows about Joe and John Kennedy's service.
You know what would make a bitchin' reality show? Having Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie join the Marines, and have cameras follow them through boot camp and on to a tour in Iraq. You could probably talk Paris into it, if you just didn't mention that signing the contract meant an actual four-year hitch.
