Hillary's chances not-so-good according to the Buffalo News
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 10:38 PM by Laurab
Not sure of the validity of the poll but she appears to be polarizing enough to REALLY get the repug vote out.

"Even though she's far ahead of her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, a poll released last week by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion indicated that 47 percent of likely voters would not vote for her for president under any circumstances."

1. Hillary will beat McCain or Guiliani
she is a much better politician than they are and she will make them stumble.

8. Yes, my firm was polling NYS in 2000 and she ran very strong against Rudy.
The gets more votes than polling points.

McCain is a very weak candidate.

11. I love Hillary, but the rest of the US isn't like NYS.

23. true... but she will have scoped that out ...
she won big time in upper New York State so she knows about how a lot of similar constituencies in PA, OH, MI, and IL will vote. She can probably write off a lot of the South although I have a feeling that she and Bill have already thought of how they can pick off enough of the South that it will make a difference.

She will make McCain look like an idiot at some point. Also, McCain's anti-middle class voting record will become well known by her surrogates. Also, she will find something that really torque's the conservatives and religious right about McCain.

Giuliani -- she will let him sink himself. Appearing in drag, putting his girl friend in the Mayor's Mansion, and just his mouth will do him in.

3. She usually has 45%-50% committed to voting against her.
Another reason not to nominate her.

6. Do you think there's ANY
Democrat who won't have 45% of the electorate vote against them?

12. I suspect that there are many Democrats who would have fewer than 45%
who, today, say that wouldn't vote for them under an circumstance.

Even if it's ends up 55:45, there are a lot of people who are open to voting for both candidates this far out.

13. I think there are many Democrats who don't have 50% already commited.
You think Hillary will be able to win over about 100% of undecideds? Thats she will need to do if she goes up against McCain.

15. I have no reason to believe
that today's poll numbers will be the same poll numbers 18 months from now.

I just don't understand why people here are so damned terrified of a "divisive" candidate. Reagan was extremely divisive. Bush II is extremely divisive. If the other side hates you, you're probably doing something right.

17. It's not the just "other side" who doesn't like Hillary
it is a good portion of Democrats and independents. Outside of DU, I don't know a single Democrat who likes her very much, and I live in a very blue city in a blue state. None of us are terrified of Hillary, we are terrified of another 4 years of a Republican president. In our opinions, Hillary as the nominee makes that much more likely.

19. and a good portion
of Democrats and Independents don't like Dean, or Gore, or Kerry, or Obama, or Clark, or Edwards, etc. etc. etc.

Senator Clinton isn't my first choice, either, but I think people who deny that she'd be a formidable candidate are mistaken.

20. I think people who deny that she has tons of negative baggage that most other candidates don't have
are mistaken.

There is a reason that so many Republicans want to see her nominated.

21. If they want to see her nominated
why do they trash her so badly?

She's been one of the most-investigated people in US history, and she's come up clean. You think they won't invent negative baggage for any other candidate? Of course they will.

Senator Clinton has been the target of right-wing smear attacks for 15 years, and it seems many here have fallen for them.

Again, she's not my choice, but I think it's foolish to underestimate her.

22. For the same reason we trash Newt Gingrich and want to see him win the nomination:
we see him as the easiest to beat.

5. Marist College is Bill 'the Shill' O'Lielly's alma mater.
Every opinion piece out of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion has a rightward tilt. Don't believe it.

18. LOL and it's a NY paper
I agree with it, but it's the first time I saw anything in my newspaper like that. The paper itself leans left - we're a blue state, and a blue city. I just wasn't sure where the poll came from.
