AP: Biden opposes Iraq troop surge
Biden opposes Iraq troop surge

December 17, 2006

MANCHESTER, N.H. --Likely presidential hopeful Sen. Joe Biden said Sunday
that he opposes sending additional troops to Iraq, even as the idea seemed
to gain support from the Senate's leading Democrat, incoming majority
leader Harry Reid.

"I will not to support a surge of troops unless it's tied to some reason
for me to believe that they have a political solution," said Biden, incoming
chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Biden, D-Del., said any proposal to send about 30,000 more U.S. troops to
Iraq should only follow a political solution that will end sectarian violence
and civil unrest.

Biden spoke at Southern New Hampshire University to about 100 people Sunday
afternoon, in an appearance sponsored by the World Affairs Council of New
Hampshire.

1. I am with you Joe B.
From the I.S.G. report ....

When we put more troops into Baghdad in Operation together forward
there was a 43 % increase in the violence they were supposed to keep
down.

2. Senator Ted Kennedy says he strongly oppose US. troop surdge
Powell also stated, today, you can't just whip up a number out of the blue like 30,000 and send them -- new troop allotments must be designed for a specific operation, the days are gone of just sending large numbers into bagdad with no specific planning --> Rumsfeld, been there done that!!

5. The troop spurt is boneheaded folly.
It's a rare day when I agree with Biden, but I do this time. More targets troops on the ground will not stop the Iraqi resistance.

6. Gosh, that's actually what Reid said
He would support the 'surge' IF it is tied to a withdrawal strategy, and that diplomacy has to be central to any Iraq strategy. Weird how they quote one person correctly and another incorrectly.

7. thank you, Joe....
....for resisting the usual repug game....the 'join-us repugs because were patriots and if you don't, your not', game....

....the reality is, the pukes are going to have an impossible time blaming the loss of Iraq on us, unless we DO cooperate with them....

....save some American lives, get out of Iraq Now!....because Iraq is ALREADY lost....

8. Um, the civil unrest is because we're there, Biden.
There's a political solution to end it, though - it's called GETTING THE FUCK OUT OF THE COUNTRY WE ILLEGALLY INVADED.

Until we leave, there will be no solution. Bank on it.

9. It is sad when Biden is more forthright on this issue than Hillary
Biden pretty much said what Colin Powell said. It is useless to send more troops unless there is a political solution.
