Rudolph Giuliani launched his presidential money hunt last night in Manhattan but struggled to defend his hometown turf from rival John McCain, who tried to upstage the ex-mayor by announcing his own big-bucks team of New Yorkers on the same day.
Giuliani's camp refused to say how much he hoped to raise at the $2,100-a-ticket cocktail party at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, the first since Giuliani set up a committee to explore a run for president.
But supporters who attended the event said it appeared to fall short of the 500 or so tickets needed to break the $1 million mark, which several Republicans said should have been a realistic goal for a figure like Giuliani at a New York event, even one hindered by being so close to Christmas.
That wasn't the only problem for Giuliani, who earlier in the day saw McCain's campaign announce a 57-member New York finance committee that includes some of the biggest names in Republican fundraising in the region.
