2004: Kucinich got fewer delegates than Al Sharpton (23-27)

I just noticed something. In 2004 Kucinich got fewer delegates than Al Sharpton. Kucinich got 23. Sharpton got 27.

2. To be expected ...
Sharpton's from an extremely populous state -- New York. And, indeed, the Rev. got 11 delegates from that state alone -- much more than Kucinich got from any one state.

That said, I don't think either of these guys had a shot in hell from the get-go. Nor, sadly, will they in 2008. I really dig Kucinich. He's got great ideas and his opinions on the issues are similar to mine far more often than not. But I doubt the dude's got much of a shot.

Oh, and you may want to edit your post. You jumbled your numbers. :hi:

3. He'll never be considered by the majority of Americans for one reason, mainly: His looks/hairstyle.
Sad, but true.

12. He is looking handsomer these days...
Something to do with the tall, stunning woman he is married to (and anyone with dumb ideas about his being gay - or that being an issue they can use to diss him - should shut up now).

5. They are awarded by Congressional district
Since we have a number of African American districts, Sharpton's main constiuency, he was able to rise above the 15% threshhold in more places than Kucinich who had more evenly distributed support. New York also have some very, very strict ballot rules which kept most candidates off the ballot there so he was running pretty much alone against Kerry in his home turf.

6. Dean was on the ballot - though he had conceded by then
I think Edwards was as well. I know my NYC daughter voted for Dean.

7. Kucinich was on the ballot in NY.
I know because I voted for some of his delegates. Let's not sugarcoat. Kucinich does not have much support.

8. How many votes did Kucinich get v. Sharpton
And do you know how they were distributed amongst Blacks and Whites?

9. Kucinich had 67 delegates
The CNN total was from after the primaries, leaving out states like Colorado and Washington with caucus systems where the precinct caucus results don't determine the final delegate count. By the time that the legislative district and county caucuses took place, most of the other candidates had dropped out, so Kucinich picked up extra delegates from the ongoing process.

Turned out that 43 wound up voting for him--decisions turned on the relationships of the delegates to their respective state parties.

http://politicalwire.com/archives/2004/07/27/kucinich_delegates_still_a_wildcard.html

Though Rep. Dennis Kucinich formally endorsed Sen. John Kerry and released his delegates, the Washington Post warns that Kucinich supporters remain a source of tension for the convention. "The liberal congressman from Ohio has fallen in line behind the party standard-bearer, but there's talk here that many of his 67 delegates will go off-message in a symbolic floor protest."

10. ...okay. I'll admit it. If I can't have Kerry/Clark, Kerry/Anyone or Clark/Anyone,
Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 07:24 AM by BlueIris
I want to vote for Dennis/Anyone. And a teeny tiny part of me thinks that if he became the nominee, uh, um, er...he could win. 'Specially if the other options were Obama or Clinton.

Flame away.
