Once Again, "Loophole" Allows Government To Violate Propaganda Laws

<snip>

The Smith-Mundt Act of 1948, amended in 1972 and 1998, prohibits the U.S. government from propagandizing the American public with information and psychological operations directed at foreign audiences.

But in two recent examples, the government has found "loopholes" in the law, allowing it to allow propaganda to inadvertently reach U.S. audiences.

1. What about Fox News?
Tom Brokaw once called it "The Government Network" or words to that effect. I know that was a joke but there's no denying there's a generous element of truth to it. I know the new congress already has a buttload of stuff to investigate but I do hope they'll get around to the relationship between the administration and Fox News.

2. not the same thing
Fox News is slanted, but they aren't breaking any laws -- the same way that any columnist (liberal or conservative) or Air America Radio are not breaking any laws.

No, the two cases cited in the linked article are actual breaking of federal law. It's up to Democrats to make sure the respective loopholes are closed.
