IOWA POLL: Edwards and Obama trounce Hillary and beat Repukes head-to-head
Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 09:33 PM by jefferson_dem
From http://time-blog.com/real_clear_politics/2006/12/new_2008_iowa_poll.html -->

Check out the results of the new Iowa poll, conducted by Research 2000 for KCCI-TV from December 18 through December 20:

Democrats
John Edwards 22%
Barack Obama 22%
Tom Vilsack 12%
Hillary Clinton 10%
Al Gore 7%
John Kerry 5%
Wesley Clark 4%
Dennis Kucinich 4%
Joe Biden 1%
Evan Bayh 1%
Bill Richardson 1%
Undecided 11%

Republicans
John McCain 27%
Rudy Giuliani 26%
Mitt Romney 9%
Newt Gingrich 7%
Condi Rice 4%
George Pataki 1%
Jeb Bush 1%
George Allen 1%
Sam Brownback 1%
Rick Santorum 1%
Duncan Hunter 0%
Undecided 22%

Hypothetical matchups among all survey respondents are as follows:

Obama 42, McCain 39
Obama 43, Giuliani 38
Obama 43, Romney 28

Edwards 42, McCain 39
Edwards 42, Giuliani 38
Edwards 41, Romney 29

McCain 43, Clinton 37
McCain 43, Kerry 38
McCain 41, Gore 39

Giuliani 39, Clinton 35
Giuliani 38, Kerry 34
Giuliani 36, Gore 34

Vilsack 41, McCain 35
Vilsack 42, Giuliani 35
Vilsack 45, Romney 28

Clinton 40, Romney 30
Kerry 33, Romney 30
Gore 34, Romney 28

Summarizing these results: Obama, Edwards and Vilsack beat every Republican. Hillary loses to every Republican but Romney. Romney loses to every Democrat. McCain runs slightly better than Giuliani matching up against most of the Dem field.

This poll looks like Hillary Clinton's worst nightmare in that it clearly reinforces the biggest knock against her which is that she can't win the general election.

3. I hope so. That's pretty vanilla on the gravitas, considering
Iran will be coming on strong.

6. Ah...the old "gravitas" argument. Love to do a Lexis-Nexis to see how often that word
Edited on Fri Dec-22-06 10:04 PM by jefferson_dem
was coupled with "Cheney" in 2000. Much good that supposed heftiness did us, eh?

8. I'm sorry - I'd be scared if Edwards was president and the
Iranians started saber-rattling. Truly frightened, actually.

9. Edwards would do just fine.
He stood up to some pretty bad ass corporations and brought them to their knees :D

Edwards has a deep understanding of humanity. That is what will make him a great President and a great world leader.

17. Corporations?
Edited on Sat Dec-23-06 09:21 AM by Clark2008
CORPORATIONS???

Um... I'm sorry, but "standing up" to corporations in a court of law is NOT the same as developing peace accords and diplomatic plans with leaders of foreign nations, particularly when there's no financial gain in it.

It's really, really, really not the same.

20. This Doesn't Even Resemble An Argument
This is the conclusion (claim) of an argument totally unsupported by any premises ( that are 1) reasonable 2) relevant to the claim and 3) suffcient to establish the claim. This is an emotional outburst. It is mere opinion. Please provide the reasons for your opinion so that there is something to deal with other than feelings. In other words, why do you think the way you do? Thanks.

23. On the other hand......
maybe, just maybe there will be no "sabre-rattling" from the Iranians. It's quite possible that they might just be willing to sit down and negotiate peace and quite with an intelligent individual like Edwards, and not with the yutz we now have.

5. Could be it, indeed.
No doubt Hillary will have a helluva time reshaping the image and chipping away at that deficit. It's not like they *don't* know her.

7. polls like this may keep hrc at home
ie not running.

the worse thing she could do is run and lose.

she would then have relinquished the one thing she has going for her: the aura of Clintonian invincibility. She would just be one more Senator.

If she doesn't run, she could soon be the most powerful person outside the executive branch.

Edwards/Obama = 16 years of Democratic Presidency, at the end of which we just may have remedied that tragedies of the bush years.

11. Shouldn't Edwards be worried that Obama is polling neck and neck with him?
Considering Edwards is a known commodity in Iowa and Obama hasn't even started to campaign there yet?

12. Obama wouldn't play second fiddle to Edwards
Obama would only be VP for someone who is older and has more gravitas like Gore or even Clark, but not for Edwards. Edwards has nothing on Obama.

15. I saw a poll recently that a majority of Americans
have never heard of Obama.

Here in Hawaii, he's the hometown boy, our 3rd Senator.

Yes, Edwards should be worried!

Pretty amazing on Obama's part that he is doing so much better than those national figures.

13. Does anyone question why mainstream corporate media
is so hot on Obama and Hillary?

And what exactly are Obama's credentials to be president -- he's an inspired speaker.

win in presidential elections.remember when Bill Clinton ran he wasn't the odds on favorite by the media. There darling was Mario Cuomo who decided not to run.

22. Boost a real Democrat's real record???
Well that just wouldn't do at all. Better to push these two out in front, and then tear the whole field down by saying all the Democrats have are a couple of weak, inexperienced, pretty faces.

24. Yes, the media loves Obama because he inspires people
he has an interesting personal story that makes for good articles. That doesn't make him a sell-out. It makes him a progressive with a chance of winning.

Now, why did the media push Dean so hard before Iowa? He was the media-declared frontrunner for months and benefited from the corporate media repeatedly calling him the "only" anti-war candidate. What does that say about Dean, in your opinion?
