Thousands of families on the Gulf Coast are spending a second Christmas in a FEMA trailer. Jesse Russell reports:
The Children's Defense Fund is seeking to draw attention to the plight of children still feeling the impact of Katrina. Malaack Compton-Rock, wife of comedian Chris Rock, recently visited New Orleans:
: "Children left in Louisiana, trying to go to school, trying to feed themselves and being raised by older sisters, raised by young aunts."
Organizations in nearly all fifty states are working to keep the Gulf Coast in the American consciousness this holiday season. In Wisconsin the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is helping Katrina victims rebuild their homes in Mississippi. Retired Catholic priest Father Paul Esser is running the effort, and he says there are ten thousand people in one county alone still waiting to get out of emergency trailers and back into their homes:
: “Their plight is really dire, and we are trying to use our money and our volunteer efforts to buy wallboard for them and so on, and help them to actually rebuild their home if that’s what they are going to do."
