Where the hell is Wes Clark?
Isn't he supposed to be running? I haven't heard a peep about him even thinking about running! Last time he waited forever and it killed his chances. It seems like he's going to make the same mistake. If he wants to run, he needs to get out there raising money if he wants to hang with HRC and Obama.

1. He's Not a Politician. He Doesn't Know How to Do this "Running for Office" Thing
What you like best about Clark is also his undoing.
He has no political experience whatsoever.
He has never really run for office.

How do you expect him to get nominated and elected?

3. Well I figured he'd be more politically seasoned by now
He's not doing anything to try to get his name out there. He hasn't formed an exploratory committee either. He's going to need to raise a boat load of money to even hang with Hillary and Obama. I guess he's probably not likely to run.

13. He is more seasoned. No Democrat has an exploratory committee yet
Evan Bayh had one for a few weeks before he withdrew, but no Democrat has set one up yet, and very few have announced. This is from Congressional Quarterly:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/cq/20061220/pl_cq_politics/2008whitehousederbythefieldsofar

Democrats

Officially announced (date of announcement)

• Retiring Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack (Nov. 30, 2006)

• Ohio Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (news, bio, voting record) (Dec. 12, 2006)

• Former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel (April 17, 2006)

Established exploratory committee (date of filing with the Federal Election Commission)

• None to date

Ask again in a month. Most Democrats are waiting for the holidays to be over and for the new year to start.

2. Literally...
He is in Los Angeles visiting his Grandbabys for the holidays. He just got done raising a shit load of $$ for the Dems to take back the houses. His schedule was a killer. He just returned from a conference in the Middle east.....

Wes in Dubai

From Steve Clemons

Bravo to General Wesley Clark for making his way to Dubai for the Arab Strategy Forum taking place here this week. It was fun to see him earlier today make his way quickly across the room to kibitz with former New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen who I am traveling with this week in the UAE.

Tomorrow, Clark speaks on a panel along with my New America Foundation/American Strategy Program colleague and CNN Terrorism Analyst Peter Bergen. Clark regularly impresses me with his vision of what needs to be done in this region as well as his clarity and bluntness. More on his remarks tomorrow.

He has been very busy. You can stay in touch with Clark by joining the mailing list at www.securingamerica.com and joining wespac.

Its not a good time to announce right now.. imo

5. You need to ask the Corporate media,
Edited on Sun Dec-24-06 03:13 AM by FrenchieCat
cause they are the ones "hiding" Wes Clark!

Maybe it's because we are fighting two wars, and "they'll" be damned if a Democratic expert and problem solver in the arena of war and peace be handed a microphone!
That wouldn't do!
How would that make Giuliani and McCain look?
Like doofuses, that's what!

Plus....The media just plain doesn't "like" Wes!

WESLEY CLARK SLAMS MEDIA CONSOLIDATION

"I don't think it is in the American public interest to further consolidate the media." Answering this reporter's question, the candidate said media consolidation "is damaging to putting out diverse opinions and fostering public dialogue. ... We need to distribute the ownership in media. We need to have the fairness in broadcasting rules put back in place."

12. A number of Democrats, from Jimmy Carter to Barney Franks to Michael Moore
have a long list of media appearances (if you count Michael as a Democrat). Media appearances and coverage of presidential aspirations are not the same thing. Of course the fact that Clark stays politically active, that he writes, that he does commentary, increase his public profile. That's a large part of why he continually polled higher than politicians like Mark Warner, and Evan Bayh who were constantly getting talked about as Presidential candidates.

If you want I can put together a list of major national polls done over the last year, concerning the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, that left Wes Clark out while including men like Warner, Bayh, Biden and Vilsack. Polls from firms like Gallop, that list is a long one. Likewise you can guess how frequently a show like Hardball, which is all political speculation all the time, even mentions Wes Clark (virtually never) let alone mentions him as a possible presidential candidate. Unless Clark publishes his own Op-Ed, the media rarely talks ABOUT him. That is starting to change a little now, and if Clark forms an exploratory committee for 2008 that will change further.

I wish him no ill will at all, but do appreciate a factual rebuttal to the endless stream of excuses for why the General is doing poorly in the polls.

29. Clark is in basement, slightly ahead of Kucinich
As in Dennis's case, I don't expect Clarkies to become discouraged. If they firmly believe Clark is the right person for the job, stick with him until he drops out.

I feel about Dennis as Clarkies do about Clark, but I am also looking at someone else, a candidate that I can live with and that can WIN.

30. The latest NNBC/Wall Street Journal Poll skips Clark
That is only about a week old. The November Pew poll skipped Clark, the Novemeber McLaughlin poll skipped Clark, the August Pew Poll skipped Clark, the February CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll skipped Clark, as did two Gallop Polls preceding the last two that they conducted.

I don't think Clark is doing that poorly in those polls where he is included. Only Democrats who already have run for President or Vice President on our National ticket, or who were married to a President, plus the new media magnet Barack Obama, ever poll higher than Clark (Biden and Clark tend to tie or go back and forth - Warner did once on one poll but usually did much worse). Name recognition and a high national profile are the factors at play right now. That is exactly why Joe Lieberman and Dick Gephardt were leading the national polls for Democrats at this point in the 04 cycle.

34. Clark was tied with Dean in Dec 2003 at around 20% in a couple national polls
He has a great deal of name recognition. He's gotten a great deal of coverage the last couple years in relation to his presidential aspirations. He has also gotten a great deal of coverage over the course of his career. I believe that he made the cover of Time once in the 70s. I read somewhere that his name was in the press more than both of his immediate superiors during the Clinton administration.

Clark does have one big hurdle to jump if he's going to run for president and that is that his appeal isn't sticky. He loses support as people learn more about him. Only 1/10th of the people who liked him in December 2003 like him now for president. Also, his polling dropped as it got closer to primary day in the primaries, IIRC.

I know people have run for president failed, run again, and won. But I don't know if many did it after going backwards in the polls. You can build up public awareness over the course of multiple campaigns, winning more and more support from people who didn't know enough about you previously. But it's hard to make people like you again after they once liked you and then decided they don't.

First lets take a look at some New Hampshire polls (Part One). Clark ended up getting 12 & 1/2% of the vote in New Hampshire. 38. Some more information about 2004
First let me correct an error in the above polling data from NH. The 4th set of numbers was for 11/05/03, not 9/03.

For your information, when the actual primaries were held, Clark exceeded 20% of the vote won in five primaries. This was during the crowded phase of the race, which means Clark was then running against at least all of these men: Kerry, Edwards, Dean, Sharpton and Kucinich, and is some cases Lieberman also. Clark left the race before the Wisconsin primary, although he was still polling in second place there when he withdrew.

Those five States were:
Arizona 27%
North Dakota 24%
New Mexico 21%
Oklahoma 30%
Tennessee 23%

Actually Clark's only led the national polls literally in the first few weeks after he announced, when Democrats were responding to the concept of a new candidate who was a 4 Star General against the Iraq War, and before Clark's opponents went to work trying to define him negatively to Democratic voters who essentially knew nothing about him.

Clark had to clear some pretty unusual hurdles in 2004. The Kerry, Lieberman and Dean campaigns all tried to tag him as a Republican before the first Primary. Here is Howard Dean on Wes Clark speaking on January 14th:

NASHUA, New Hampshire (CNN) -- Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean trained his rhetorical guns on New Hampshire primary rival Wesley Clark Wednesday, questioning Clark's credentials as a Democrat.

"He is a good guy, but I truly believe he is a Republican," Dean said of the retired Army general and former NATO supreme commander who declared himself a Democrat shortly before entering the presidential race last year.

If Clark were to win the Democratic presidential nomination, Dean said, the general election would be "the Republican primary."
http://unv.net/2004/ALLPOLITICS/01/14/elec04.prez.main/index.html

Clark's support dropped into single digits in the late Fall of 2003 and then began rising again until the Iowa results, where Clark didn't compete, completely changed the dynamics of the race, giving Kerry and Edwards unstoppable momentum. Here is a news snippet from October:

"Clark Continues Tumble - A Newsweek poll asked Democrats and Democrat leaners who they "would most like to see … nominated as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in 2004:"

Dean - 15 percent

Clark - 12 percent

Lieberman - 10 percent

Kerry - 8 percent

Gephardt - 8 percent

Sharpton - 8 percent

Moseley Braun - 6 percent

Edwards - 5 percent

Kucinich - 4 percent

Other/None - 4 percent

Undecided - 22 percent

Newsweek Poll, 356 Registered Democrats And Democrat Leaners Nationwide, Conducted 10/23-24/03, Margin Of Error +/- 6 percent)"
http://www.seacoastonline.com/2003news/11012003/col_capi/58387.htm

Now here is news coverage of two Gallup polls, one conducted December 14th 2003, the next on January 7, 2004:

January 07, 2004
Encouraging new poll results for Wesley Clark
Posted 11:21 am
Two significant new polls were released in the last 24 hours, both of which are welcome news to supporters of Wesley Clark’s campaign.

First up is the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup national poll that shows Howard Dean continuing to lead the race for the nomination, but by a far smaller margin than before.

Just a month ago, Dean, enjoying a bounce after receiving an endorsement from Al Gore, had a huge lead in Gallup polling. In a poll released on Dec. 14, Dean had 31% support against Clark’s 10% — a 21 point gap.

The new Gallup poll released yesterday, however, shows a much tighter race. (margin of error +/- 5%)

Dean — 24% (down from 31% in mid-December)
Clark — 20% (up from 10% in mid-December)
Kerry — 11% (up from 10% in mid-December)
Lieberman — 10% (down from 13 in mid-December)
Gephardt — 9% (up from 8% in mid-December)
Edwards — 6% (up from 4% in mid-December)
The other three below 5%
http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/1045.html

This data I think shows what actually killed Clark's Presidential bid; Iowa:

On December 17th 2003 Clark was tracking at 8% of the NH vote with Dean at 45% and Kerry 20%. (Clark had dropped from 11% recorded December 3rd.) The January 2-4 numbers though put Clark at 12% in New Hampshire. For the 4th through 6th period Clark tracked at 16%. For that same period Kerry was down to 13%. For January 8-10th Clark was up to 20% in New Hampshire while Kerry went down to 10%, and Dean was at 35%.

During the January 12-14 period Clark hit 24% in New Hampshire, Kerry was rebounding to 15% and Dean was at 29%. Kerry wasn't rebounding because of his campaigning in New Hampshire, he was rebounding because of his campaigning in Iowa with all the National media attention that was receiving. You see the Iowa caucuses were about to be held on January 19th, less than a week away, and the National Media was finally paying attention to the Democratic Horse Race. I remember it well, every night the political news focused on the fight for Iowa and the Democrats who were campaigning there. Clark wasn't one of them of course.

For the January 16-18 NH tracking poll, taking it to the very eve of the Iowa Caucus, Clark had slipped to 20% while Kerry had risen to 18%. Edwards who had been stuck at 3% a week before had risen to 8% with Dean down to 28%. Then came the Iowa caucus with Kerry and Edwards finishing One and Two. The NH tracking period for January 20-22 showed Clark still hanging on to 20% but, surprise surprise, Kerry was starting to really surge, up to 31% while Edwards climbed to 11%. By the January 24-26 poll Clark had bottomed at 13%, Kerry was at 35% and Edwards was at 15%. Dean had rebounded to 25% after bottoming out in the mid teens right after the Iowa caucus. When New Hampshire actually voted on January 28th Edwards, even with all his new media attention, had slipped back to a shade over 12% of the vote and Clark edged him out for third place. Kerry won of course with over 38% and Dean got over 26%

It was all Iowa. Iowa and the non stop media coverage of Iowa, and the media focus on Kerry and Edwards and all the "momentum" they "developed" in Iowa. Without Iowa, Clark was poised to come in First or a very close Second in New Hampshire, in the first real vote of the year, against two neighboring New Englanders who had been stomping in New Hampshire for a year each. Clark got very little national media coverage starting the week before the Iowa caucus, until the day he withdrew after winning one Primary and coming in second in three. After Iowa it was all "John John" and "Dean Scream". Though he finished fourth in New Hampshire, the media decided that John Edwards should be considered with John Kerry for the Democrats who left New Hampshire with "momentum" coverage slot.

As to Clark's current numbers, at this stage that has as much lasting meaning as Al Gore's current numbers. Al Gore won the popular vote for President in 2000, don't you think he can better the numbers he is getting in the current polls if he actually began campaigning for himself? Let's wait and see what actually happens when the candidates are known and they are out there campaigning.

35. Yes, but what is it going to take for him to do better?
Clark does not fit any of the special catagories you define. What is it that will make him the "it" guy someday? I think that clearly, qualifications just aren't enough (wish it were so). He has to find a way to get some cache.

Maybe if Gore doesn't run, Steve Jobs can help him out.

40. A few ways are possible.
First people may remember that Wes Clark predicted exactly what was going to happen in Iraq way before most anyone else. Here is a reminder:

Portsmouth, NH Tuesday, December 2, 2003
Portsmouth Herald

Clark says U.S. is losing ‘war on terror’

By Shir Haberman
shaberman@seacoastonline.com
Campaign 2004 Archive

Gen. Wesley Clark soundly criticized President Bush on how he is managing the war on terrorism.

"We are not winning the war on terror," said the former NATO commander. "Today’s terrorists are regrouping in Afghanistan, while tomorrow’s terrorists are being recruited in Iraq.

"We should get an international authority to oversee the reconstruction and help recruit international troops, freeing up American forces to go after terrorists," Clark said. "Our current efforts are not only ineffective, but dangerous."
http://www.seacoastonline.com/2003news/12022003/col_capi/63444.htm

Second, I honestly think John Kerry is in trouble if he tries to run again. As our last nominee, his polling numbers are terrible. Clark will become the formeost Democratic veteran in the race. Clark also has strength in some areas of the South (like Texas) and Northern Plains and Mountain mountain states, as well as in the South West. Carol Shea Porter who won a Congressional seat in New Hampshire in November, was a very strong Clark grassroots person in 2004. Overall Clark has a strong base of grassroots supporters to balence his appeal to moderates and Independents. There will be people drawn to Clark in 2008 in a manner similar to how many were drawn to Dean in 2004, but that won't be Clark's only source of support. Clark should also be the candidate best able to tap into public distaste for "typical politicians" and Washington insiders, since he is neither.

31. I want to support Clark, and I will, but,
we can't assume that something is just going to change and make things different from last time or make him suddenly successful. Grassroots support isn't enough. Dr. Dean showed us that. The candidate has to do the things necessary to put himself in a positon to win. And in my (limited) experience that means getting publicity, getting money, building an extensive field team, and surrounding yourself with hard core, professional campaign people who know what it takes. Anything less, and you are another "candidate of principle" sucking up money and volunteers in a desperate attempt at magic. Even JFK probably stole his election by today's standards.

A candidate may make the best president of the field, but he has to be the nominee before he gets the chance to prove it. Clark's toughness cannot be doubted, but is he WILLING to play the political game to win? The next 30 days should be informative.

Happy Holidays, DUers! Thank you Skinner, et. al. for letting us play in your yard!

The Congress needs to start 2007 by addressing the media issues in addition to Iraq and min wage. Dems are practically buried unless they're 'flavor of the month'.

They're either trashed or ignored. That has to change.

16. Wes Clark deserves a break..Happy Birthday to Wes and Wes 2
His grandsons birthday is on Christmas, as Wes was yesterday. IF ANYONE deserves a break it is Wes. He has been flying under the radar building his ultimate goal, of working for his love of Country. His attendance in Dubai was to talk to the Middle East leaders, to build dialog with those who have power, even if they don't agree with us, to build alligence. To discuss our common interests, plus building trust, and respect for the US. He sees problems differently then our current administration, he believes we must talk to people. The WORLD leaders (ME) has great respect for Gen Clark, as he saved millions of ME lives in Kosovo. It isn't about HIM, its about our COUNTRY!!

HE IS NOT A POP STAR, HE IS A LEADER!!!

AND anyone notice how the media didn't say "Boo" about McCain hiring a well-known dirty trickster thug to run his campaign. Shows Mr. Side-talk isn't going to play fair and straight any longer. Should be big news. It's not according to corporate media. Wonder how much they're donating to McCain's coffer.

25. As an Edwards supporter, what is the "advantage" to your insistence
Edited on Sun Dec-24-06 03:45 PM by FrenchieCat
In always speaking of a shadowy "alliance" between Wes Clark and Hillary Clinton?

What is it that the candidate you support stand to gain based on this stuff about Clark/Clinton that you keep repeating with nary proof? (if you have proof, you should show it, otherwise you should end this subliminal rumor mongering--Cause we all can play that game)

Just askin'?

15. patience, grasshopper ...
timing is everything, and now is not the time.

the hardest thing for a candidate to do is to keep the buzz and momentum going till when voters cast their votes in the primaries. If he declares too early, he will have to spend more money to keep his name in the news (via campaign ads) and will risk fizzling out too early. He won't make the mistake of declaring his candidacy too late, he's already learned that lesson. There's an ideal time to declare his intentions, and Wes is a smart guy who has learned a lot of valuable political lessons in the past 4 years -- if he decides to run, he'll know when to announce it. :)
