U.S. military death toll in Iraq exceeds number of deaths in Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in U.S.

The Associated Press
Published: December 25, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq: The U.S. military death toll in Iraq has reached 2,974, one more than the number of deaths in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, according to an Associated Press count on Tuesday.

The U.S. military announced the deaths of two soldiers in a bomb explosion southwest of Baghdad on Monday. The deaths raised the number of troops killed to 2,974 since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003.

"The joint patrol was conducting security operations in order to stop terrorists from emplacing roadside bombs in the area," the military said in a statement on the latest deaths. "As they conducted their mission, a roadside bomb exploded near one of their vehicles."

Another soldier was wounded in the explosion, the military said.

4. Maybe Daryl Worley should ask bush
Have you forgotten about bin laden? Daryl, a chickenshit motherfucker country and western singer wanted us to all be patriotic and fiery about bush's great war with his oh so patriotic song. Course daryl didn't enlist as one might expect a patriot to do. Well daryl I guess you and your kind have forgotten about bin laden.

3. OK, you RW whores - what now?
The numbers are in. We've lost more servicemen that civilians were killed 9/11.

What now? What's your excuse for staying in Iraq?

I'm waiting for your answer...............

5. Oh the right wing noise machine
will whine that evil liberals are bringing up the fact that bush has gotten more Americans killed in Iraq then he allowed to be killed on 9-11. And they'll just be all beside themselves when we point out the fact that bush has gotten more then 3,000 slaughtered. That day is just around the corner. Of course all those whining won't do anything in service to their country.

Kinda sucks being a "conservative" in America today; knowing that you are responsible for the continuing deaths of our troops in a never ending war started by a lie you accepted.

8. Up until now their defense has been
the number of military dead was still less than the total killed on 9/11.

No more. They've lost this lame argument this week.
.
Now they'll shift to some other senseless reason why Bush's Iraq war is justified.

10. I like how the RW ties 9/11 with Iraq....
....And this is to 'defend' freedom in a post 9/11 world, but yet we've lost as many lives in this war as on that regretful day in 2001.

If this isn't a case for our exit, I don't know what is. Sad day for America!

11. These numbers are shocking
But as most of us enjoyed a "happy holiday" yesterday with families & friends. Many of our troops do not know when or if they are going to see their families again. What about the nation of Iraq? The muslims have a big religious festival beginning today. Many of them will not see their families & lots of them will mourn family losses during this last year. By some figures as much as 650 000 dead (we know this number cannot under any estimate be under 100 000). Millions displaced & refugees in foreign countries. A nation in civil war. Development brought to a standstill. In fact the country has fewer people receiving the basic utilities than under the heavily sanctioned government of Saddam Hussein.

12. When the true US military casualty #'s come out we will be shocked!
All WH numbers are known to be reduced to lessen our alarm.

Some reports last year were that only those who die in Iraq are counted, not those in transport to US military hospitals in Germany, or those sent to US hospitals, or suicides etc.etc. The true # is whispered to be staggering.

*gov't has tried mightily to keep Katrina (reported well over 6,000 deaths) and Iraq death count below WTC casualties so as to continue to use 9/11 to rally everyone 'round the flag of someone else's 'evil' and not *'s.

14. it's wrong to compare these statistics
the invasion of Iraq was not a legitimate response to 9/11 ... Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11 ... statistical comparisons of the lives bush has wasted in Iraq and the number killed on 9/11 are an apples and oranges comparison ...

i agree with the following:

source: http://www.slate.com/id/2156259/fr/rss/

An unjustified comparison: An Associated Press story about Christmas Day casualties in Iraq took pains to point out that the number of American soldiers who have perished in Iraq—2,978—is now greater than the Sept. 11 death toll—2,973. Bloggers of all political persuasions are wondering why these numbers are being compared.
