Mind Bender: what is your real reason why Bush wants to continue to war in Iraq?
I believe it's to install a permanent US. presence in the middle east and to offer 'guidance' as to future requitions for the Iraqi oil. (but that's my take)

What do you think?

10. No.....if anyone thinks the Iraqis or insurgents are going to allow us to have.........
a permanent 'encampment' in any form within Iraq, I believe they are mistaken. 'WE' will eventually be driven out as in Vietnam or go broke trying to continue our occupation of Iraq.

25. But there is a difference from Viet-Nam....
In Viet-Nam we were fighting another COUNTRY...N. Viet-Nam.
In Iraq we are fighting insurgents. And the government installed
in Iraq is pro-USA. So, unless Iran or Syria openly get involved
in kicking us out, no chance of our getting kicked out by the
insurgency alone.

Vietnam was one country that was artificially partitioned in order to facilitate an election that Ho Chi Mihn and the "communists" would have won easily. ALL VIETNAMESE were "insurgents"!

To think that they were two countries is just bullsh*t!

The U.S. perpetuated the fiction of North and South Vietnam (with the U.S. puppet government in the south -- hmm, just like Iraq) in order to control vital resources in the region and keep them from Chinese hands...follow the money.

4. The question should be
Why did the powers behind Bush want to be in Iraq in the first place? I don't believe that Bush has an independent thought on his own.

For that I think it is oil and a permanent presence in the middle east. To me it seems like the plan was to create chaos to make our presence that much more needed. The chaos makes our presence look like it is necessary to quell the violence. It is also much easier to steal and take advantage of the situation if there is no strong legitimate government.

a true believer. How could he not be? He surrounded himself with the Cheneys and Wolfowitzes of the world. Neocons who were the theorists and thinkers who started the belief system in the first place. The strong neocon influence saturating the upper levels of the administration included the people who'd been writing--along with Bill Kristol--since the late 90s, that we could re-shape the ME by bringing democracy to it. But I think he has always known that such lofty goals could only make a President a spectacular success or a spectacular failure. And that's where he is now. The person who said he's now fighting for his legacy is correct. He knows the worst case scenario for how history will view him, and he's fighting for a different outcome. I'm sure he has to tell himself everyday that this war could one day turn out to be great for the Middle East; I don't know how he could get through the day if he didn't force himself to believe that. And as badly as this has all gone so far, that proposition still has not been proven false. This will take a generation to play out. What it does for the Mideast region in the long run does not necessarily coincide with what's happened in the short run. See the US Civil War.

9. At first...
Edited on Tue Dec-26-06 03:18 PM by TwoSparkles
Junior was the water boy for the PNACers. He was just the friendly face who was
supposed to sell us the tyranny, world domination and murder--under the guise
of freedom and peace.

Now, the PNACers have scattered from their failed catastrophe. Junior knows he's the
one left holding the bag. His reputation, legacy and dignity are contingent upon
the outcome of Iraq. Instead of getting out--as he should--he's thumbing his nose
at the entire world--and relishing every second of it. He's angry that they forced
him to leverage a pile of shit--and he figures that it's his legacy. He'll do what
he damn well pleases.

He's punishing the PNAC thugs for attaching his legacy to their failed grand plan.
He's punishing the American people--for going against him and disagreeing with him.
He's punishing the Republican party--and he'll run in right into the ground--because
the entire party forced him to risk everything for Iraq.

The PNACers--and the Republican party who backed this nonsense--created their own little
Frankenstein.

The real reason Junior wants to continue the war in Iraq? Junior realizes that he's been
totally screwed by everyone around him--so he will continue to sublimate his rage at those
who oppose him and those who used him----simply because it makes him feel good
and it's all he's got.

It's senseless to ponder why...and assume that Junior's Iraq stance ANYTHING to do with
anything as complex as a military strategy or geopolitical gain. Junior is a prancing fool.
He doesn't care about oil. He doesn't even understand the Middle East. There are no political
permutations here.

As sad as it is...we are where we are--because Junior is having a temper tantrum. The PNACers
through him a bone to chew on--and it exploded in his face. He knows the war exploded in his
face. He doesn't care. He'll hold on to what's left--and insist that he can fix it--until
the day he leaves office. It's punishment to the PNACers. It's revenge against American
citizens who have sunk his poll numbers and voted against him in 06.

Kidding of course.

19. For all the reasons mentioned above...but the first and main one is
because he down right HATED Saddam and was determined to kick his ass all over the ME for trying to kill his Daddy. Plus, he was an easy mark and a chance to show the world how fierce we are and the whole ME and world had better watch out and do what we say if you know what's good for you! If it was just for oil...we would have gone into Iran...they were the biggest threat. Another reason is he wanted to best his Daddy and go down in history as the one who got rid of Saddam. There's one thing for sure...it wasn't to establish Democracy!

Sorry...didn't answer your question!

27. Not wanting to be recorded as history's all time screw-up.
Bush can't stand the thought of that final judgment landing on his deserving head. Where can he hide for the next three or more decades of his life? Everywhere he goes, especially among his family, Bush will be the idiot who got handed a job that was over his head and who created a catastrophe. He is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths -- so far. The fire he started is still burning. It's picking up steam.

Bush has documented his craven character in his own inimitable words, saying things like "Fuck Saddam! We're taking him out," and "Bring 'em On," and "I am a war president," and "I am the decider," and "Watch this drive," and "Who you talkin' to." As Omar Khayyám said, "the moving finger writes..." It is writing something about Bush that he can't bear.

Bush is not good hearted. He can make himself cry by thinking about "sad stuff," but that doesn't make him good hearted. A good hearted person is one who acts in a good hearted way, not someone who cries when Old Yeller dies. Bush is the epitome of everything one wants their children not to be. He is a bottomless well of reflex self-approval, a vaporous mind, an inept leader, and homicidally negligent. He is destined to be a bug on the griddle of history.

Bush's only chance to avoid that fate is to keep rolling the dice, no matter how long a shot, no matter who suffers. His Administration and Rummy's toady generals aren't in much better shape. They're all exposed. Cheney is a hard shell of leather around a core of leather, so he will be unaffected. He'll just retire and shoot the birds that his hired hands toss in front of his gun.

I think you are right about the original neo-con reason for going into Iraq. But even the neo-cons are starting to say that things are just way too fucked up there now and we should ease our way out. But they made an bit of a miscalculation about how intractable Bush can be. He thinks God told him to do this thing and, BY GOD, he is going to stick it out.

33. Chaos in the ME keeps the price of oil high.
Iraqi civil war between the Sunni and Shi'a keeps Saudi Arabia distracted by Iran and vice versa. And so what if a few nukes go off? Like Mecca or Tehran are necessary in the greater scheme of things.

It's a win all around: Big Oil can charge whatever they like for their product, the military-industrial complex gets to sell great gobs of weapons, Halliburton & the Carlyle Group get to bleed the American public for trillions of dollars in no-bid contracts that they don't have to do anything for, and the MSM keeps the same American public zombiefied with the "entertainments" it provides and simultaneously afraid of phantom "terrorists" from people the neocons have newly pissed off.

36. First of all, Bush is a seriously disturbed individual in need of serious therapy
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 08:20 PM by IndianaGreen
Bush wanted to earn his mother's love. Bush was in competition with his dad for his mother's affection. Iraq gave Bush the opportunity to do the one thing his dad had failed to do: remove Saddam Hussein from power. This is why Bush had such a single minded purpose in pursuing the war. Bush wanted to impress his mother by becoming the conqueror of Iraq.

The reason Bush would never go along with the Iraq Study Group's recommendations is that to do so would have made him look like a fool by his father's cronies.

The reason Bush will keep us in Iraq until we win or are driven out, is because Bush thinks he can win the war by sheer force of will (this is one attribute Bush shares with Hitler!).
