US meaning "We the People" and not the abbreviation for US (United States).

What brings this to mind is a C-Span Forum on African-Americans and the Media today.

One of the African-American Leaders on the "Eisenhower Institutes Panel" of discussion said: "We have forums and discussions with emminent Academicians ...people who have great credentials...but the MEDIA always asks: 'Will Jesse Jackson be there, or will M'Fumai be there?'

Her point was that the MSM only will come and listen and report if there's what they "THINK" will be a Black Leader there so they can get a great quote for the Wire Services or one of the MSM Top Newspapers...otherwise...they Do Not BOTHER!

She said: "People want to know WHO OUR LEADER IS!"

I wonder myself who the AMERICAN PEOPLE want as their LEADER...

What IF...OUR LEADER AT THIS PERILOUS MOMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY...is left to US .."WE,THE PEOPLE" on Blogs and working for Charities and Environmental Groups and Voter Rights Groups and all the rest of what we are doing.

What if HILLARY and OBAMA...and EDWARDS and the REST...ARE NOT the LEADERS??? WHAT IF? THEY SHOULD BE FOLLOWERS?

8. Republicans know this --- they put up
figureheads and sell them as leaders. Don't for a minute think that the Republicans ever considered GWB or Ronald Reagan to be real leaders.

Description
A beautifully packaged book of spiritual ruminations with a progressive political edge, from the incomparable Pulitzer Prize-winner--a woman who has devoted her life to befriending the earth.
From the Introduction: ""In fact, the happiness that imbues this kind of (impersonal) friendship, whether for an individual or a country, or an act, is like an inner light, a compass we might steer by as we set out across the lengthening darkness. It comes from the simple belief that what one is feeling and doing is right. That it is right to protect rather than terrorize others; right to feed people rather than withhold food (and medicine); right to want the freedom and joyful existence of all human kind. Right to want this freedom and joy for all creatures that exist already, or that might come into existence. Existence, we are now learning, is not finished! It is a happiness that comes from honoring the peace or the possibility of peace that lives within one's own heart. A deep knowing that we are the earth--our separation from Earth perhaps our greatest illusion--and that we stand, with gratitude and love, by our planetary Self."
Author of the perennially bestselling novel "The Color Purple," Alice Walker has long been a force for sanity in a chaotic world. In "We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For" she draws on her deep spiritual grounding, her political conviction and experience, and her literary gifts to offer a series of meditations filled with wisdom, hope, encouragement, and, at times, serenity to a world in need of all these things. The perfect gift for Alice Walker fans and anyone who longs for peace, on earth and within, this lovely volume will be embraced for its wiseinsights and mature compassion.

13. Good Point...and that's my hope..."we just can't see it, yet."
It's growing under our grassroots feet but it feels like there are so many set backs that we can't see it...but it's growing...and greener under our feet... bit by bit...day by day...a little at a time...

4. Amen to that
I always thought that looking to one person alone to "save us" was a cop out. I also think we are definitely coming to a point where the people will realize that it will have to be us who lead. Isn't that the true spirit of being an American? The big question is, can the American people as a whole do that? Or are they too anesthesized by television and other diversions to even care?

BETTER LIFE...not some American Dynasty run by another King George or former Presidents looking to Re-Make their Image!!!

Both Georges and the Clintons had their time...but their travelers and hangers on want to "RE-DO" their former Power and re-make it in their image for the Text Books!

ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!

It's OUR TIME to TAKE IT BACK!!! All us IMMIGRANTS whether we've been here a LONG TIME or JUST ARRIVED!

We have GOT TO MAKE THIS WORK! We didn't come here for another ROMAN EMPIRE/DYNASTY that would FAIL IN ENDLESS WAR AND OCCUPATION OF FOREIGN TERRITORIES!

We all left our "home countries" to GET AWAY FROM THAT OPPRESSION!

Oppresion from EMPIRE or DOGMATIC RELIGIOUS FERVOR...WE LEFT BECAUSE....WE were OPPRESSED!

10. Exactly so
Eugene Debs once said something like if I could lead you into the promised land like Moses I would not do so because if I could lead you in someone else could lead you out. WE are the top layer of government and WE are the ones that need to lead. I say we demand an end to the Iraq war and impeachment in that order.

11. In what sense?

This is one of those things that sounds like a truism but on examination turns out to be meaningless, I think.

There are 300,000,000 people in the US. If that's a leader, it's an incredibly scizophrenic one.

One could make a case that politicians should adopt the most popular position on every issue, but it's not a position I would ever support.

The basis of the American people is not that the people "are the leader" in any sense, but that they get to choose who leads. I think this is a far better approach.

14. I don't think that's a meaningful statement.

Who are you referring to as "we the people"; and who are you excluding from that category?

What action are you proposing that the people you're referring to as "we the people" take, and do you think they are going to do it?

Your comments are phrased in the broadest of broad generalities; I don't think there's any way to translate them to specifics.

It's very comforting to have a faceless "them" to blame for all the world's ills, and an "us" to be absolved of responsibility, but I think it's a temptation to be avoided. People don't divide up into "them" and "us" - two monolithic blocks with one agenda each - they divide up into "me" and "you" and "him" and "him" and "her".

It is rampant and deeply-entrenched. And deeply fascist.
