We picketed LBJ's White House...back when you could do that!
25,000 strong! The EARLIEST Anti-War demonstration of that era.
S-D-S!

Now THERE was a kick-ass group!!

3. I belonged to a highschool SDS group in Milwaukee
in 1966-67.
Our English teacher had helped draft The Strawberry Statement.
2 years later we were organizing highschool kids.
This desire to help bring about a better democracy led to being targeted by COINTELPRO and Operation CHAOS types of supression because it was "thought" that we were communist dupes, not American kids that believed in making our Constitution and Bill of Rights work.

4. So the dozen in the Boston Common spring 63 was not a demonstration?
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 11:10 AM by papau
Actually we had a table - some handouts - and a guy who spoke now and then

And I was not a "member" (don't think there was a way to become a member - I don't even recall the answer to my question about why the handouts said SDS - although "student" seemed to fit my lifestyle at the time) but I went to the Boston Common because the politics were of interest.

But I think you will find few that are looking for a re-union. Later SDS became rich kids - resulting finally with the weathermen - your dad made 30,000 a year or more was the joke - and violence against the State was ok for a dozen reasons.

Nope -I was into softer protests - later that decade "clean for Gene" comes to mind, and going one on one with the CEO of PRUDENTIAL ins - a deed that destroyed my get rich hopes, but did not destroy my life or career.

6. Well, my college roommate was in SDS. Does that count?
He got me to go to numerous demonstrations. I was teargassed in both Berkeley (by police) and New Haven (by National Guard). My roommate got me to go to some seminars on Marx. // But I wasn't actually an SDS member.

7. Fall 1965
God I miss the intensity of those times. We had a small but vocal group on our campus that grew exponentially as the war consumed more of us - our president and a few of the core group became increasingly more strident and ended up going underground with the Weathermen - ended up in Chicago and then came home and tried to blow things up. I often wonder what happened to him. Still try to live by some of those ideals... “We would replace power rooted in possession, privilege or circumstances, with power rooted in love, reflectiveness, reason and creativity.” And no GalleryGod, you are not alone!

8. "Joined" in 1966.
If "joined" actually meant anything in those days. Hell, everybody was in the SDS. I still have an old button that says, "Vote in the Streets - SDS".

Does anyone remember those really cleancut looking guys shoving cameras in your faces and clicking away? I started by giving the peace sign then switched to the peace sign minus one finger. I've often thought that I should demand the FBI or whoever should at least send me copies.

"It was the best of times and the worst of times."
