Poll question: Were you sad Gerald Ford died?
Edited on Wed Dec-27-06 02:08 AM by Tiggeroshii
I personally was. He seems to me to be one of the last liberal presidents in the 20th century and did a good job at resonating that.

1. Damn right I am sad!
The poor guy literally walked into a quagmire, and left honorably with his dignity intact. I didn't agree with all that President Ford had done while in the White House, but I admired him for his courage, respect for the POTUS office, and his dedication to his family, and to the country. He wasn't a pretentious type of guy and that was a quality I did admire in him.

And I thought highly of Betty Ford and her bringing visibility to breast cancer and to addiction treatment.

Yes, this is a sad day, and my condolences for Betty and the rest of the Ford family.

49. Oh for Pete's sake, the country was not a "quagmire"
when Ford was shunted into the White House. The country started to go down hill when the Reagan administration helped along the demise of corporate regulation. Quagmire? How so?

Besides, he was 93. He lived a full, rich life. That's more than I can say about a lot of people in my profession these days.

He was a real athlete who stumbled once and was branded as an clumsy oaf. The chimp falls off a sofa, a bicycle, and a scooter and they give him a pass. Sickening. RIP Gerry. You deserved better. You bailed the country out! And rrstored dignity to the oval Office. And you had the good sense to marry a wonderful women. God bless Betty Ford.

50. He bailed the country out? Of what?
He took over when Nixon resigned, and guaranteed a pardon for his Republican buddy. I fail to see what you think needed to be "bailed out". The country was not exactly falling apart for God's sake.

11. No, but then again, I may be too young to understand
It seems once you get to that age, there's not much more you can do. I mean, Clinton is still active, but he is just on 60. 93 you can hardly travel the world speaking about peace and everyone coming together. The most significant thing he did, that I know of, was pardon Nixon, and that in itself was, well, I don't really know. Sure I'm sad that someone died, but not really SAD. If grandma dies, yes, I'm SAD, but I can hardy say I'm SAD because I didn't even know him.

I know that made no sense, but it's late at night, well, early morning ;)

13. Here's what happens when questions like this are asked..
Because... as we all know, most true DU'ers are good-hearted kind people ~ ~ who of course would be sad that a former U.S. president had passed on.

But what happens is...

The question is placed on here.

A good majority of DU'ers click on YEAH, I'm sad he passed on....

Then the lice-infested, lardasses over at Free Republic who like to lurk in the background here will tamper with skew the results.

Within a day or so.. the post, and the results (the ones written by freeAKERS, not us) are posted on their pathetic site owned by PJ Comix who literally lives here at DU.

His problem is that he re-prints comments from lurking freepers for the most part. (The idiot thinks he's posting about us!)

The dude is completely asinine. ----------------------> http://dummiefunnies.blogspot.com/

He doesn't get a lot of responses to his threads. According to one of our lurking FR's, she told me why they don't care for the guy.. WOW. -- He is VERY STRANGE and in not a good way!

Anyway - betcha anything the dipshit will add this poll to his "DummieFunnies" site ...

Not when the Bushes do. It will simply be "noted": he was old. I must say that it saddens me not in the least, actually. It was quite expected for some time now.

and i feel about the same way i do when a senator or foreign leader dies - nonplussed. he wasn't elected, he wasn't president that long, he wasn't particularly good or bad.

31. How about... ambivelant?
Best wishes for the family - always hard to lose a loved one, even when it is time. But other than that... just sorta don't care. He has stayed out of the limelight for years. Hasn't taken a high profile either politically, nor humanitarianly (not a word - but you know what I mean). He played a part of history - his role was so short - that it seems that historically speaking, he was a "bit" player. That "bit" was significant - but appears to have been (at the times) inevitable. RIP - condolences to the family.

34. Hell no! let me rephrase that, HELL NO!
This bumbling moron pardoned a crook and set the course for the bullshit we now are living in because of that single action.

If a president who breaks the law can't be held accountable then what's the point of having a democracy????

Prior to that, he also looked the other way while serving on the warren commission.

Bottom line, this pig has always looked out for what was good for the repuke party and not the nation.

The concept of cause and effect were totally alien to this man. It was republican party first nation second.

39. I have to say no
I really did not care much about his presidency when I lived through it because I was 4.

But I have studied history enough to know that letting Nixon get away with his crimes, coupled with letting Reagan get away with his crimes, has allowed this monstrosity we call the Bush administration to exist today (and because of precedent and "politics as usual", it looks like Bush will get away with his crimes, too).

I cannot sweep that under the rug because the man loved his wife.

So he died...that is sorta sad. But am *I* sad? Hell no....I didn't know him and I certainly didn't care about his presidency. If a Freeper wants to quote that, then let them. I don't care about their media-influenced cult of personality.

And we have to STOP this nasty precedent of letting our government get away with anything they wish "because it would be painful for the nation". Ford started that precedent in Presidential politics, and it has brought this nation to ruin. We always look the other way, now...don't we?

I disagree with Kennedy on this one.
