Ford's legacy: Evangelical Jimmy Carter who opened the door
for the religious wrong to get their feet in the White House and in domestic policy.

Ford was right in pardoning Nixon and leaving Watergate behind. Which is why many today do not want to bet distracted by impeachment proceedings.

However his pardoning brought Carter, one of the worst presidents in our history, who could not distinguish between a church pulpit and the world stage. Carter was openly proud in claiming that his was a full time Christian service and it did not take long for the religious wrong to follow on this. Thus they mobilized to help elect Reagan and Bush who openly claims that he gets his directive from his god.

And... Carter was the first to bring Nukkelar to the White House.

4. Did you not know that Carter is an Evangelical man
who was carrying this beliefs into the White House? Who, even now, is having a problem with Israel that is secular rather than "fulfilling" the teaching of the bible - whatever these should be?

Did you not know that when he was a president he was trying to view world affairs through the eyes of a preacher? And failed miserably?

7. I forgot, you're part of the "Israel Only" crowd.
How low it is to try and tarnish a man who has done so much for Israel and the rest of the world just because he doesn't see Israel as the ONLY country that matters.

2. what a load of horsehockey
carter always said that his religion motivated him, but he never rammed it down other peoples throats. he never said he thought atheist shouldn't be citizens. he never made jews out to be wrong or inferior or destined for hell.

whatever the merits of ford's pardon of nixon, it has been rendered obsolete by the circus impeachment of clinton.

the pardon didn't bring carter. it might have been one (small) factor, but there were many others, not the least of which were double-digit inflation, oil embargoes, and ford's less-than-dynamic personality, in contrast to carter's million-dollar smile. to the extent that nixon mattered, it was that ford was tied to nixon by virtue (or vice?) of being in the same party and as having been his vice-president, not by the pardon in and of itself.

the religious wrong (thank you for that term!) would have done their thing regardless. carter being a religious president (and he was hardly the first) had nothing to do with it. do you really think it would have slowed them down one bit if carter hadn't ever said anything religious?

you do get one point for 'nukkelar', though his pronounciation was more like 'nu-key-uh'. and the man was a nuclear engineer for crying out loud!

3. Can this be nominated for most asinine thread?
You present no facts to back up your slander and pervert history to suit your agenda. This is nothing more than the most vile flamebait.

5. Disagree. While Carter may be a radical born-again, he did not
allow his beliefs to dictate his actions. In spite of professing Christianity he has done many humanitarian things, promoted peace and was trained in science.

6. Carter practiced what he preached
He had his beliefs, but he took the true Christian way and didn't try to force them on everyone else. And calling the only man to foster a lasting peace in the Middle East the worst president in history, with BUSH in the white House, is pathetic.

8. Sure, Carter's presidency had problems...
From a souring economy to the Iran Hostage Crisis, these were problems that would have been difficult for any president. Cater also had vry strained relations with the (Democratic) Congress trhat left him frequently ham-strung.

Yet, despite all of this, Cartyer ranks as one of the most respected former presidents of all-time. In my opinion, Carter has exemplified what good a former president can do. The fact that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize is a testament to that.

Another former president who distinguished himself was herbert Hoover. Like Carter, he fell victim to economic chaos and being unprepared for how to handle it. When Hoover passed away, one commentator suggested a three-word epitaph that could just as easily become Carter's in the future:

ELECTED
REJECTED
RESPECTED

10. As I read this post, I kept waiting to see a sarcasm symbol--
I'm a bit shocked that it is serious.

You might as well blame Sirhan Sirhan. If he hadn't killed Robert Kennedy, then Kennedy probably would have defeated Humphrey for the Democratic nomination in 1968. Kennedy would probably have beaten Nixon, therefore, no Nixon, no Ford, etc.... etc.....
