Something overlooked about the Jane Fonda / John Kerry thing |
|
the photo was taken in September 1970. The other rally they were at was in January 1971. Fonda didn't even go to Hanoi until 1972
Unless Kerry, like Pat Robertson, claims to have the ability to predict the future, I don't see why anyone should think he should be held responsible for sitting in the same audience with her at the time

6. I respectfully disagree... |
|
...to an extent. You're right, it should be a non-issue. i do know, however, that we're dealing with a party, the rethuglicans, and a team, the bushies, who will stop at nothing and will consider no depth too low to sink to. They don't even have to say it themselves. They have enough "useful idiots", ala novak, drudge, limbaugh, hannity, coulter, etc., to do it for them.
The answer continues to be, IMHO, lots of word of mouth at the grassroots level. We also have to show the right wingers that the days of progressive thinkers shrinking away because they snarl are OVER!
By the way, I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

It doesn't matter what the time frame is. The republicans will run with it and it will be effective.

If the Republicans do try and make this an issue, the fact of the dates on these pictures will backfire on them and it will be played as another Republican dirty trick.

7. It will only be effective if we allow it to be effective |
|
We need to be writing every editor of every newspaper in a preemptive strike against GOP tactics like this. We need to get the chronology in the hands of every interesting person. We need to put a lot of effort into making sure that this non-issue remains just that, a non-issue.

8. Whats interesting is Jane Fonda was fighting for the same things we are |
|
fighting for today.
And shes getting more of this reverse patriarchal sexist scrutiny?
Jane Fonda is what patriotism is all about and fighting for Democracy. Thank God we had her idealism back then, although it has brought her much pain and much unfair scrutiny in the process.
In case people dont realize, she was trying to stop yet another profit driven war called Vietnam.
Jane Fonda is truly a hero and she cares about this country more than most probably.

10. You said it right. The real traitors are Bush, Nixon |

And the other war-mongers.
Jane and Kerry were brave back then, and right.
Kerry has walked a long way from those days in the years since, however, especially with his war vote.
But I will defend him on this one, fer sure.

9. As I've said elsewhere, this picture is a shot across the bows. |

The GOP is trying out different scenarios before they have to face our nominee in the GE. If this raises interest, like our charges of Deserter (oh, sorry. Forgot Kerry said that was over the top) raised interest in the history of the Invisible Airman you can expect to hear much more on it, especially from groups whose names I'm not allowed to post on DU.
Just one oar in the water but a really destructive one for our whole society. The wounds are still deep and only scabbed over, not healed.

13. The biggest problem with the photo is that it shows where the fault line |
|
is on this issue.
Kerry is running on the notion that vets and people who care about national security will feel comfortable with him.
But the republicans can drive a wedge right into that demographic by playing up his anti-war protesting. Jane Fonda is a powerful symbol of sympathizing with the enemy.
She sat in that AA gun which was used to shoot down America pilots. Americans who care about national security will not like to be reminded of that aspect of the anti-war effort.
